I was also partly inspired to post this by the same article Eruonen posted about in Off-Topic.

I know Tolkien was steeped in the sagas, and didn't need a painting to have come up with Eowyn's story, but still . . . (of course here, "Snowmane" belongs to "Eowyn").

The Eddas, Poetic and Prose [In reply to] Can't Post

are cited among Tolkien's influences, even with several key names shared among his works and the Eddas. IIRC all of the dwarves of The Hobbit are named from those works, apart from Balin (and Dwalin is derived from a similarly spelled name). There are other's too, Gandalf most prominent.

Of course the names may have been used for flavour, the way culturally identifiable names are used in other works, rather than referring to exact characters... I suppose stories, themes and motifs can be used the same way.

Lovely painting, evocative of how we might imagine scenes from the books, especially since PJ's LOTR movies.

Thanks Ethel Heart

This is very interesting [In reply to] Can't Post

... and a name and a story I had never heard. Very Eowyn indeed - including the headstrongness in face of fatherly wishes and advice of the elder Hervor, a fighter too.- who also like Eowyn decides she's had enough of it and settles down to marry and have kids. I'm sure Tolkien must have known this story. Thank you!

Yes, I discovered kind of to my shock several years ago [In reply to] Can't Post

the list of those dwarf names I'm on a list of Norse saga character names, or somewhere like that. I really thought he had made them all up! But now I see it as part of the way he is anchoring his own Myth into the history of England.

I was actually just wondering if this scene in the book was partly influenced by this actual picture, since visually there are elements that are very similar. It was fun running into this completely by accident looking for something utterly non-Tolkien-related.

Yes, I had never heard of it either. [In reply to] Can't Post

I was wondering if the painting itself had influenced the scene in the book, of course with a rearranging of the elements.

It's very suggestive, isn't it? [In reply to] Can't Post

- we have an "Eowyn" being found dying by an "Eomer", who might actually be her brother in the Hervor story as well; plus a "Snowmane", plus all the background stuff about the elder Hervor's career of headstrong shieldmaiden/wife & mother. And the picture has the right "feel" too. I really think you are on to something here.

I haven't read all his published letters, but [In reply to] Can't Post

I have the feeling this probably isn't mentioned, or someone would have brought it up over the years. Doesn't mean it wasn't in his head (or inner eye) somewhere, though.Smile
