Alas! [In reply to] Can't Post

All mine show are: Previous Thread, Next Thread, Watch Thread, Print Thread, and View Threaded. I feel like Frodo in the Dead Marches :(

We are the fighting Uruk-Hai! We slew the great warrior! Well, yeah, first he killed a bunch of us and another whole lot of Mauhúr's lads, and we had to shoot enough arrows into him to drop a Műmak. But we got him!

Those are the headings.... [In reply to] Can't Post

when you're in a thread. The Creation/Activity options appear only in the forum view.

Roads go ever ever on
Under cloud and under star
Yet feet that wandering have gone
Turn at last to home afar.
Eyes that fire and sword have seen
And horror in the halls of stone
Look at last on meadows green
And trees and hills they long have known.

Thanks for the advice, all! [In reply to] Can't Post

Then I definitely will start a new post when the readings pick up again in February (though I'll still just post next week's reading in this thread since it's only optional).

Maybe I'll start a new post for each week's reading as well. Though maybe that would be overkill, since this forum doesn't get that many posts in a week...

The moon in the pre-dawn skies of 1419 Afteryule 16 [In reply to] Can't Post

The http://shire-reckoning.com/moon.html article addresses the appearance of the Moon when Frodo wakes "late in the night" of Afteryule 15/16 in Lothlórien.

The moon would have risen right around midnight, and it would have passed into the western skies by dawn, so when Frodo sees "the sickle Moon was gleaming dimly among the leaves", it must have been between midnight and dawn on Afteryule 16. However, since the moon was only hours away from its third quarter, it should have appeared as 1/2 full, but not yet like a "sickle" for another night or 2.

Lunar Readalong for the week of 1419 Afteryule 25: The Battle of the Peak [In reply to] Can't Post

This week's optional reading skips ahead to "flash-back" descriptions of The Battle of the Peak that occurred while the Fellowship continued to rest in Lothlórien.

After this week, I believe there are no more readings for the next 3 weeks until the Mirror of Galadriel scene. Then there will be a reading practically everyday for the next 40 days until the destruction of the One Ring!

Afteryule's new moon and the 3-day Battle of the Peak [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm a little surprised Tolkien never described the "sickle moon" during the 3-day Battle of the Peak, since it was a new moon the day before it started, and that seems to be one of his favorite lunar imagery. Maybe it was a detail Gandalf didn't think was important. Or maybe the moon couldn't be seen after sunset through all the "vapour and steam" and ice that "fell like rain" :)

This also demonstrates once more how the moon phases this year are not an exact repeat of the 1942 moon phases, since the Afteryule new moon fell about a day later by this year's reckoning.
