which are you? Can't Post

I run across variations on a quote about the three kinds of people and what they talk about. There's some judgmentalness in these quotes that I'm omitting, but I thought there might be something to it - for example, do extraverts tend to talk more about people, while introverts prefer to talk about ideas? Maybe people who are more family-oriented talk more about people? So I thought I'd ask y'all. What are you and why do you think that is?

I fall in the 'ideas' camp. I'm always interested in the "deeper meaning." My 10-year-old great-nephew, who is similar, has learned to describe himself as a "meta" person. Apparently there are those who find people like us annoying or pretentious, but as Tolkien would say, what they like to talk about bores me so to each his/her own.

I've been thinking about this question all week [In reply to] Can't Post

... and finally had to punt and vote 'other,' meaning 'all of the above.'

Part of my struggle narrowing it down has to do with the fact that I'm much more of a listener than a talker. It's very much a part of why I've had a successful career as a consultant. I do a LOT of listening. However, I don't just listen (ask B.G. Sly). I *do* start conversations about things that interest me, but after thinking about it quite a bit, I just haven't been able to narrow it down to one thing over another. It's totally dependent on what's going on in the world, in the community, in the lives of the person I'm talking to, or in my life. I genuinely don't prefer talking (or listening) about ideas more than people more than things. I enjoy talking, listening, and learning about 'all of the above' and am happy to tailor it to the given situation or person at hand. If I do, I find I always walk away having learned something.

To answer your other question, in my experience, a preference of talking about things vs. people vs. ideas doesn't automatically correlate with a person's sex, or social tendencies like introvert/extrovert. Of course, I haven't run any official studies, but I know and see people from all walks of life that always surprise, and break the mold of how a man, woman, introvert or extrovert is 'supposed' to act. I like (and appreciate) that you took judgemental comments out of the poll. Thank you! I'll never understand why differences can't just be differences without someone feeling they have to pass judgment, always on the' differences' that don't apply to them. Crazy

Ideas [In reply to] Can't Post

Mamma always said "If you can't say something nice about someone, don't say anything".

And Daddy always said "You can't take it with you. And even if you could it'd probably burn."

So that just leaves Ideas.

LOL! [In reply to] Can't Post

I shall be quoting your daddy in future I can tell.

that's up there with "no rest for the wicked . . . and the holy don't need it" (a favorite of my lapsed-Lutheran choir director).

I thought that was what Thumper said... [In reply to] Can't Post

Anyway, I'll chime in "Ideas" as well here. Personally, I find them a lot more interesting than the gossip that usually goes along with talking about people.

I love to discuss storylines and fictional characters, etc. Not really sure whether that falls under ideas or things or people......
