Speaking of upcoming movies about ripe old post-WW I literary figures...

I just learned that 'Goodbye, Christopher Robin' is opening by the end of this year. It's (as far as I can tell) an utterly unironic depiction of how Great War veteran A. A. Milne created the 'Winnie-the-Pooh' series via his son Christopher's playtime fantasies. Here is the trailer. Some of the comments on the YouTube site echo my own reaction: it's fairly well known that Christopher Robin grew to resent his immortality as a juvenile fiction character, and A. A. Milne had literary aspirations that were dashed by his own success as a children's author and poet. As much as I love the Pooh books both from my own rather Anglophilic childhood, and also from their success with my young daughters, I find the underlying story kind of pathetic and - I should think - worthy of a somewhat darker and more introspective film. I also wondered how much this film might communicate to us what Hollywood's ambitions are, in terms of tone and message, for its upcoming two (I think) J. R. R. Tolkien biopics. As an aside, respectfully of course, I have long cherished the overlap in names (and possibly in themes) between the Milne and Tolkien families.

As a child I loved the books & cartoons, and got them for my kids (particularly Margaret). I don't know, at this time (particularly in the USA) maybe we could use some good cheer, movies about hope, etc. Makes me think of that movie that Johnny Depp did about Mr. Barrie(?) who wrote "Peter Pan." So many good British biopics coming out - Gary Oldham is going to play Churchill, and I'm super-excited about that one!
