https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-Mnp6VAmEc Chuck Connors starred in this TV show "Branded" and I recall as a small kid this opening sequence and the broker saber. Must have been pretty crappy steel to break like that. (A real saber would not break like that...unless it was damaged.) His character carries the broker saber ala Aragorn like. "McCord retained the handle of his broken saber with attached pommel. He had the remaining blade sharpened into a long knife, which he used in many episodes." https://civilwartalk.com/...-saber.100230/page-2 "...Colonel Smith told me was that they had 'condemned swords' and would heat the center and beat them rather thin in an area, and sheath it. Usually the person to which is being 'reduced' is dressed with the altered attire and symbols of rank, as to publicly strip the individual. It is done when a person is executed holding a NCO or Officer being stripped of rank also, before execution in the 'square.'" Posted by M. E. That's one old Western show that I don't think I've ever heard of before. The remaining, short blade of the sabre would have been much like a samurai's wakizashi (short sword--which, by the way, a disgraced samurai would use in ritual suicide).

the Dodgers and the Cubs...last game: September 30, 1951, for the Chicago Cubs. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chuck_Connors In many ways, he was like Brian Keith - "As Connors was strongly typecast for playing the firearmed rancher-turned-single-father,.." Cigarettes did him in like so many in his era.

...in George MacDonald's short story "The Broken Swords" (from his Works of Fancy and Imagination Volume X, 1871), after the disgraced protagonist's court-martial his sword was broken *over* his head!
****************************************** The audacious proposal stirred his heart. And the stirring became a song, and it mingled with the songs of Gil-galad and Celebrian, and with those of Feanor and Fingon. The song-weaving created a larger song, and then another, until suddenly it was as if a long forgotten memory woke and for one breathtaking moment the Music of the Ainur revealed itself in all glory. He opened his lips to sing and share this song. Then he realized that the others would not understand. Not even Mithrandir given his current state of mind. So he smiled and simply said "A diversion.”

It better be a pre-weakened blade or that would do a lot of damage - to the head!
