Songs about Middle-earth

Here's a list of some of my favorite songs about Middle-earth; some of them are from the soundtrack of the films or from the LOTR musical; others are settings by various individual artists. I always enjoy listening to any of these songs. This list does not have any instrumentals, just songs with lyrics. 1. The Last Good-bye (Billy Boyd): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4j_kCQ4f2Q 2. Now and For Always (LOTR: The Musical): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bvqq6_Lq9sg 3. Hobbit Drinking Medley (Peter Hollens and Hank Green): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iUKjJn0rOec 4. Into the West (Annie Lennox): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shdiTRxTJb4 5. Far Over the Misty Mountains Cold, Extended Cover (Clamavi de Profundis): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8ymgFyzbDo 6. All That is Gold (Brooks Williams): https://www.youtube.com/...HdmWIXJco 7. Bilbo's Last Song (BBC radio production Lotr): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xO4aaiftLuA 8. The Song of Durin (Clamavi de Profundis): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxfoa23skHg 9. Evening Star (The Fellowship): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8limpHGeAM 10. In Dreams (Peter Hollens): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gyY3Op47Uto 11. Children's Song in Dale (Broceliande, The Starlit Jewel): https://www.youtube.com/...ccNRIOCQcUEwEhtoNZ4P 12. The Greatest Adventure (Glenn Yarborough): https://www.youtube.com/...BL6OaYV_KXYOLfSd0eUQ 13. The Stone Troll (The Hobbitons): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gMF0fCZ1XQ 14. When Spring Unfolds (Broceliande: The Starlit Jewel): https://www.youtube.com/...ccNRIOCQcUEwEhtoNZ4P 15. Galadriel's Lament (Broceliande: The Starlit Jewel): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IeAt0sDAME 16. Oliphaunt (The Tolkien Ensemble): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftowZDdpDeg 17. Beware the Wolf (The Fellowship: from In Elven Lands): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zjiuFe99PA0 19. Hymn to Elbereth (The Fellowship: from In Elven Lands): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFHl0IDG8Dg These following two are on the list because I love the melodies Donald Swann used for them (which were approved by Tolkien himself), but I don't really like the operatic style of this singer. I think a lighter, more folksy singer would suit them more. Unfortunately, so far as I can tell, no one else has ever covered them. Or if they have I can't find them on the internet. I'd love to see someone cover these songs and others from "The Road Goes Ever On". I Sit Beside the Fire and Think (Setting, Donald Swann): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRwophzlaoY In Western Lands (Setting, Donald Swann): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umkryJnFeyI What are some of your favorite songs about Middle-earth? Whether Tolkien's own words set to original music, or simply songs inspired by the story?

I hadn't known about many of those - thank you, I'll have to give them all a listen! (I made some edits to your post, making the links clickable and removing some garbage code that had gotten into it. )

I tried to edit it myself, but for every bit of odd code I deleted, several more of the same one appeared! Then it told me I had waited too long! I appreciate it! Code hates me, and formatting drives me nuts. I hope you enjoy the songs!

"The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins" is so much FUN! Plus, the geek value of Spock singing about Tolkien. Though it is kind of amusing to see him grinning amidst all those go-go girls. I enjoyed "I See Fire" very much, but I had to cut the list off somewhere! But it's a wonderful counterpoint to the Dwarven version at Bag End. I'm hoping to see some new ones in the comments that I've never found before.

Yu have some great songs on there. I also haven't heard some of those, thank you for the introduction to new ones. I really like LOTR: The Musical. "Now and Always" is a good song. I also really like "The Cat and the Moon" and "Finale." Another one I really like is also called "Song of Durin" (though different lyrics) by Eurielle ( https://youtu.be/t0Rm9XX8dXE )
"I name you Elf-friend; and may the stars shine upon the end of your road!" - Gildor "If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world."- Thorin

I will check out the one by Eurielle! I love all the cast recording of the LOTR musical--"Cat and Moon" is so much fun, and the "Finale" is rousing! I also love "The Road Goes On" (even though the line about churning a goat into cream always makes me chuckle) and "Lothlorien" and "Hope".

You might like David Bratman's 2010 essay.

It's called "Liquid Tolkien" (borrowed from Ellen Kushner's description of Sibelius's music) and is probably the best chapter in Brad Eden's Middle-earth Minstrel collection. I saw Bratman present a modified version a few years earlier, which he interspersed with numerous examples of the music he was describing.
