I've come of age in TORn years! A birthaversary post.

Today marks my birthday, and also my commemoration of finding TORn back in 1999. 18 rewarding years have followed, getting to know so many great people, including meeting some of you in person. To celebrate my birthday, we've left the rain and sleet back home and are currently on the lovely island of Santo in Vanuatu. Unfortunately I can't magic you all here, but as a small compensation, some photos: Gorgeous ni-Vanuatu children. A blue hole: we swam in 15 metres of gloriously clear, startlingly blue water. Port Olry, where we had a swim, then lunched on lobster by the beach. This has already gone down in my personal history as one of the great birthdays, and there's still chocolate cake to come! The staff where we're staying want to make me a cake, and chocolate seems perfect.

Looks like an amazing place to be! Congrats on putting up with us so long, and thank you for everything you've done to help make TORN exactly what TORN is today. Notta

****************************************** Once Radagast dreamt he was a moth, a moth flitting and fluttering around, happy with himself and doing as he pleased. He didn't know he was Radagast. Suddenly he woke up and there he was, solid and unmistakably Radagast. But he didn't know if he was Radagast who had dreamt he was a moth, or a moth dreaming he was Radagast. Between Radagast and a moth there must be some distinction! But really, there isn't, because he's actually Aiwendil dreaming he's both Radagast *and* a moth! -From Radagasti: The Moth Dream

You share a birthday with my husband. But then, special people have solstice birthdays What a lovely place! Enjoy it and the chocolate cake as well. (Yummm, chocolate cake....)
Where now the horse and the rider? Where is the horn that was blowing? Where is the helm and the hauberk, and the bright hair flowing? Where is the hand on the harpstring, and the red fire glowing? Where is the spring and the harvest and the tall corn growing? They have passed like rain on the mountain, like a wind in the meadow; The days have gone down in the West behind the hills into shadow....

Good call. You'll be pleased to know that the traditional post-winter-soltice front of crapola weather is hitting, with the upper half of the North Island getting drenched today and tomorrow. That should make your sunny basking-weather doubly enjoyable! Happy birthday, dear Kimi.

It's my sister's birthday today too - growing up we always thought how lucky she was to have her birthday on the longest day of the year. But I guess for you it's the shortest day!

Goodness, how could 18 years go by so fast? Must be the pleasure of excellent company such as yours! It's great to hear your trip is going so well already, and with cake still to come. 🎂 May the rest of your trip be just as wonderful, and your travels home smooth!

My goodness! I can't possibly think of a better birthday with the exception of me being on the other side of that camera instead. Seriously, thank you for sharing the absolutely gorgeous pictures of Vanuatu with us (in lieu of chocolate cake), and I hope the rest of your birthday trip just keeps getting better and better!

And Happy Birthday too . Can't believe it's been 18 years. It's been 15 for me - yikes! I remember way back when you First Agers were passing your fifth anniversary, and I never thought I would get there. Here's to many, many more great years on TORN!

Yes, it's the shortest day of the year at home, although here in the tropics that makes almost no difference. When I was little I didn't understand what was meant by "shortest day", and thought the adults meant my birthday actually had fewer hours in the day than other days of the year. I remember feeling very hard done by until I figured that out. It does mean, though, that apart from the three (I think) birthdays I've spent in Europe, they've all been in bleak weather - until this one!
