**A Founders Day Game for weaver: Last Lines
|

|
Welcome, all and sundry, to Founders Day! This quiz is a tribute to our dear TORnsib, weaver, whose passing was felt deeply by many, for she had wonderfully enriched our lives. Once in the Reading Room, she had made some interesting observations about the last lines of the chapters in LotR. So in weaver's honor, I present to you the Last Lines Quiz. Below are the last sentences of 15 of the chapters in LotR: 10 you should be able to recognize, but the other 5 are challenges! Can you name that chapter? Closed book, if you can! 1. But the next day there came no dawn, and the Grey Company passed on into the darkness of the Storm of Mordor and were lost to mortal sight; but the Dead followed them. 2. "Very polite." 3. "There will be no dawn.'" 4. Towards it they now hurried desiring only to find a fire, and a door between them and the night. 5. With a last effort Frodo, dropping his sword, slipped the Ring from his finger and closed his right hand tight upon it. 6. Wailing they passed under the waiting shadow of the trees; and from that shadow none ever came again. 7. "To me it feels more like falling asleep again." 8. Frodo did not see him again for a long time. 9. Gimli cast his hood over his face. 10. Rohan had come at last. Absolutely Ridiculous Challengers - just for fun! 11. "Let us go!" 12. "Ride on!" 13. "Not yet." 14. "Good night!" 15. "Sleep well!"

Uhhh... wrong movie! Okay... I'll behave! ;) Sorta! Ok... I hope this isn't considered cheating, but I'm only going to look at the Table of Contents. My memory is very nasty now... and I just can't remember all of the chapter titles anymore :( BUT I will not peek to see any lines!! Don't worry... I still plan on making oooodles of mistakes :D 1. But the next day there came no dawn, and the Grey Company passed on into the darkness of the Storm of Mordor and were lost to mortal sight; but the Dead followed them. Passing of the Grey Company 2. "Very polite." Journey to the Cross-roads 3. "There will be no dawn.'" Minas Tirith 4. Towards it they now hurried desiring only to find a fire, and a door between them and the night. A Shortcut to Mushrooms 5. With a last effort Frodo, dropping his sword, slipped the Ring from his finger and closed his right hand tight upon it. A Knife in the Dark *shudder* 6. Wailing they passed under the waiting shadow of the trees; and from that shadow none ever came again. Helm's Deep 7. "To me it feels more like falling asleep again." Homeward Bound 8. Frodo did not see him again for a long time. The Shadow of the Past 9. Gimli cast his hood over his face. A Journey in the Dark 10. Rohan had come at last. The Pyre of Denethor Ohhhh dear... my brain just stalled out :( *putter-putter-pfttt* Absolutely Ridiculous Challengers - just for fun! 11. "Let us go!" 12. "Ride on!" 13. "Not yet." 14. "Good night!" 15. "Sleep well!" THANKS SO MUCH DERNWYN! Now I have to read LotR with MORE awareness ;)

1. But the next day there came no dawn, and the Grey Company passed on into the darkness of the Storm of Mordor and were lost to mortal sight; but the Dead followed them. The Grey Company (I wonder, is this the only chapter in which the chapter's title is in the very last sentence of it? With a closed book, I do not remember if "Treebeard" also does. But I think it does - doesn't he say "Night lies over Isengard"?) 2. "Very polite." Said by Merry, in The Road to Isengard. 3. "There will be no dawn.'" Gandalf in Minas Tirith (both the city and the chapter). 4. Towards it they now hurried desiring only to find a fire, and a door between them and the night. This one has me stumped. Could it be the end of Fog on the Barrow-downs? 5. With a last effort Frodo, dropping his sword, slipped the Ring from his finger and closed his right hand tight upon it. Easy. A Knife in the Dark. But a big whoops! for me - I have stupidly written Flight to the Ford at first, and am now using the editing window. So no credit for me on this one! 6. Wailing they passed under the waiting shadow of the trees; and from that shadow none ever came again. Helm's Deep. 7. "To me it feels more like falling asleep again." Said by Frodo, at the end of Homeward Bound. Note the different perspectives of himself and of Merry. 8. Frodo did not see him again for a long time. A Long-expected Party. 9. Gimli cast his hood over his face. A Journey in the Dark. Poor Gimli! 10. Rohan had come at last. The Siege of Gondor. A cleassic, which I should remember - on the first Founder's day we've organized five different TORnsibs to compose RR posts on the end of this chapter. Absolutely Ridiculous Challengers - just for fun! 11. "Let us go!" I am not quite sure. Could it be the Lady, in The Mirror of Galadriel? Well, that is my guess. If wrong, I would guess Gandalf at the end of The Voice of Saruman, but I still guess Galadriel. 12. "Ride on!" Very tricky! This is said by Eomer, at the end of The Muster of Rohan; but I think there is another short paragraph following it, isn't there? So perhaps it is Gandalf, at the end of The White Rider. 13. "Not yet." Very difficult. I guess it is Gollum, at the end of The Stairs of Cirith Ungol. 14. "Good night!" This and the next one I might easily confuse. But I think this is Bilbo, at the end of Many Meetings. 15. "Sleep well!" I will hazard a guess that this is Faramir at the end of The Window on the West. But I might be wrong, I'll check what were NEB's answers, to see how many I've got right... Thank you, dernwyn!

As noted here in 2008, we discussed that phrase and its use to close a chapter in 2005. When the old forums are archived--that's still happening, right?--I'd like to look back and see exactly what we said about that.

Feel free to use the Table of Contents, these lines are tricky enough! 6 out of 10 on the first part, that's not bad at all, it's hard to figure these out, when they're out of context. I'll post the answers shortly. Then it will be time for us all to re-read the story again!

For recognizing your own error! 10 out of 10 in the first part, and 3 out of 5 in the second. Interesting, both you and NEB have #14 and #15 reversed, which is not at all surprising, considering the similarity of the phrases. And yes, "Treebeard" does end with the Ent saying that!
