reading the elvish passages Can't Post

You know when there is a long passage in Romanized elvish, such as at the end of "Many Meetings" or in "Farewell to Lorien," be honest, do you actually read it? To be sure, if you're coming to this site, you're probably not a typical reader of Tolkien, so maybe you do! But I suspect most readers sort of register what it is, maybe read the first line, and then skip it. Any thoughts?

Well [In reply to] Can't Post

First time my eyes just sort of glided over the stuff. Most of the poetry too. And a lot of the travelogue description. And half The Council of Elrond chapter.

Yeah, I'm a member of The Great Unwashed.

Depends [In reply to] Can't Post

On why I'm reading. If I'm looking for something particular but I've been reading and rereading these books since 1972. So I tend to skim. Or savor. Again it depends on why I'm reading though I'll admit I know I skipped the poetry the first decade or so.

Only after the Sil did it even register [In reply to] Can't Post

I definitely was (and still mostly am) a skimmer. I think after reading the Sil, I was more tolerant of these passages. Not that they all necessarily relate to the Sil, but I did see that Tolkien had a truly greater world out there, and that these elvish passages were important to him because he considered them an essential part of that world.

So now if I encounter one, if it relates to something I'm interested in (Beren? Check! Gondolin? Check!) I'll enjoy it a lot, but other passages are a bit of a slog :)
