My top 10 [In reply to] Can't Post

BEST
1. Movie - tough call, pretty much split between AUJ and DOS

2. Character - do I REALLY need to say?

3. Line - "Aren't you going to search me? I could have anything down my trousers"Laugh

4. Costume - Hm, another tough one. Probably this one:

5. Hair - take a guess!

6. Book Scene - another tough call; either "Riddles in the Dark" or "Barrels out of Bond," although that one was stretched a bit.

7. Original Scene - Thorin's ice fight with Azog.

8. Credit Song - Probably "I See Fire," although "Misty Mountains" as sung by the Dwarves is my most favorite.

9. Weapon - Orchrist!!!

10. CGI - Smaug!!!

WORSE

1. Movie - BOTFA, though I hate to say "Worse," just not as well-loved is more like it.

2. Character - Alfrid, mostly because there was too much of him.

3. Line - "Because it was real."Frown

4. Costume - Loincloths! If I NEVER see another Orc or Troll in a loincloth, it will be too soon!

5. Hair - Probably Nori's - poor Jed!

6. Book Scene - Can't really think of one.

7. Original Scene - Legolas with bats & running up falling bricks

8. Credit Song - Not really a credit song, but the Goblin King's song in the EE was awful (though I suppose it was meant to be)

9. Weapon - I'm gonna go with the stubby troll thing that had no hands or feet; that was kind of a weapon, wasn't it?

10. CGI - Thranduil's elf army was both too identical and too mechanical

I'd say I've entered my second childhood, but I never left the first!

Oh good something to take my mind off the news [In reply to] Can't Post

BEST
1. Movie - DoS. AUJ was a fun ride, but DoS has both of my favorite elves, so.
2. Character - Tauriel. (with Thranduil an honorable second)
3. Line - Bofur's "Think furnace, with wings!"
4. Costume - Thranduil's battle armor.
5. Hair - Tauriel again.
6. Book Scene - Barrels out of bound.
7. Original Scene - The Feast of Starlight.
8. Credit Song - I See Fire
9. Weapon - Sting.
10. CGI - Smaug

WORSE
1. Movie - BOTFA. Sacrificed storytelling for the sake of romance (which was much better handled in DoS), "epic" battle scenes, and Legolas.
2. Character - Alfrid all the way.
3. Line - "Bollocks, sir?" Blech.
4. Costume - Laketown Master.
5. Hair - LT Master again.
6. Book Scene - can't really think of one...
7. Original Scene - That'd be a tie between Legolas running up falling rocks and Legolas bat-gliding.
8. Credit Song - Don't have one, I liked the score.
9. Weapon - Alfrid the trebuchet missile.
10. CGI - the elven clone army

I'll try... [In reply to] Can't Post

BEST
1. Movie: AUJ
2. Character: Bilbo or Thorin, both perfect casting imo
3. Line: More of a speech, but
"Such is the nature of evil...in time all foul things come forth."
4. Costume: Fili's stripped down armor in BotFA
5. Hair: Fili-Thorin tie
6. Book Scene: Riddles in the Dark
7. Original Scene: You were always my king.
8. Credit Song: I See Fire
9. Weapon: Orcrist
10. CGI: Smaug

WORSE
1. Movie: BotFA
2. Character: Alfrid but only in BotFa. I liked his role in DoS.
3. Line: Because it was real.
4. Costume: Bolg's.
5. Hair: Radagast
6. Book Scene: I can't think of any book scenes that were completely ruined. Maybe the fact that Bombur's falling into the enchanted river and being carried was included in the EE but didn't convey any of the emotions of the book version.
7. Original Scene: Thorin runs around with a wheelbarrow and rides molten gold, Legolas hangs from a bat and climbs falling stone
8. Credit Song: Of the three, I liked The Last Goodbye the least.
9. Weapon: Azog's blade-arm
10. CGI: Elven armies, parts of the barrel chase

Bests and Worsts [In reply to] Can't Post

I probably could list a dozen “bests”, by which I mean personal favourites, for every category but had to struggle to find a single “worst” for most. Also, these are just what came into my mind today.

BEST
1. Movie: AUJ and DOS are kind of tied: I love one for its fidelity to the book and the other because it’s different.

2. Character: Bilbo, because I can’t choose.

3. Line: All good stories need some embellishment

4. Costume: Any of Thranduil’s outfits

5. Hair: Thorin or Thranduil but I also like Fili’s hair and beard

6. Book Scene: Thorin’s death

7. Original Scene: A Feast of Starlight or Gandalf comforting Bilbo after Thorin’s death

8. Credit Song: The Last Goodbye

9. Weapon: Thranduil’s swords

10. CGI: Smaug

WORSE
1. Movie: TBOTFA is my least favourite of the trilogy by a small margin, maybe because for some reason there’s a lot of battle.

2. Character: The Goblin King

3. Line: Bollocks

4. Costume: They all look good to me

5. Hair: Nori’s is the strangest but the Master’s is the ugliest

6. Book Scene: Can’t think of one.

7. Original Scene: The Master eating testicles.

8. Credit Song: I See Fire is my least favourite of the three.

9. Weapon: Couldn’t think of one but Bombur’s ladle will do. Thanks Smaug the iron.

10. CGI: I noticed the CGI in the “Barrels out of Bond” sequence and if I noticed it, it must be bad

let's have a go, shall we? [In reply to] Can't Post

I probably should go back and watch again to comment on these. I know last time I watched i had a list of a dozen or more “bests” and worsts, but of course I didn't write them down and now have forgotten most of them.

BEST
1. Movie -- AUJ - has the best fidelity to the book without going off the rails too much.

2. Character -- I'll have to go with Bilbo, Martin did a pretty good job bringing him to life (Although Gandalf was -again- done perfectly).

3. Line -- "Stop! We have to turn around...I forgot my handkerchief." love the delivery of that line!

4. Costume -- hard to narrow that one down. been a while since I've seen them (xmas), no one in particular is standing out above the rest. we know costumes and armors are the best detailed in the business

5. Hair -- strictly hair? Kili? best beard? Balin, Dwalin and Gloin.

6. Book Scene -- the one I was most wanting to see was the Thunder Battle. and it didn't disappoint!!....riddles in the dark and mirkwood canopy were also very good.

7. Original Scene -- Gandalf and Bilbo after Thorin’s death

8. Credit Song -- Lonely Mountain - though the dwarven rendition is even better.

9. Weapon -- although Orcrist was beautifully done, I really did like Tauriel's fighting swords and the Elven infantry knives

10. CGI -- this one is hard to narrow down. CGI was hit and miss throughout with some really stand out scenes and some cringing ones. some of the best for me were: Smaug, Dol Guldur

WORSE
1. Movie -- BOFA -- too little development and too much gratuitous CGI fighting

2. Character -- BOFA Alfrid

3. Line -- there were a number of cringe-worthy lines - all a result of forced dialog. can't remember exact lines right now...

4. Costume -- again been too long since I've seen them

5. Hair -- tied: the Master’s and Beorn's

6. Book Scene -- Barrel out of Bonds was one of the worst sequences for me. period.

7. Original Scene -- Wereworms, Legolas' brick and bat (worse than his horse mounting from TTT).

8. Credit Song -- I See Fire is my least favorite of the three.

9. Weapon -- weapons were one of the areas that was very well done all the way around. I guess to pick a worst of the good: there were a couple impossibly heavy ones used by the dwarves, azog's arsenal.

10. CGI -- worst CGI? man, that's tough to narrow down. barrels out of bond, BOFA fight sequence,

Enginerd

Er.... OK [In reply to] Can't Post

BEST
1. Movie
All three - sorry, I just can't separate them. Each one has too many favourite moments for me to single one out.
2. Character
Bilbo because it's his story and for me the film played him just right; Thorin because he was such a thoughtful reworking of the book character
3. Line
'All good stories need embellishment'
4. Costume
Thranduil - specially the darker one. And the armour
5. Hair
Fili- hair and beard
6. Book Scene
'Far over the Misty Mountains'/ Smaug
7. Original Scene
Feast of Starlight/ the acorn/ Bilbo and Gandalf
8. Credit Song
Pippin's
9. Weapon
Orcrist
10. CGI
Smaug

WORSE
1. Movie
-
2. Character
Stumpy
3. Line
Bollocks
4. Costume
Don't know
5. Hair
Bolg's
6. Book Scene
Don't have a worst
7. Original Scene
Stumpy
8. Credit Song
Like them all
9. Weapon
?
10. CGI
I notice it in Radagast's chase with the orcs in AUJ

For still there are so many things
that I have never seen:
in every wood and every spring
there is a different green. . .

4. Costume - Alfrid, thought he looked too much like Wormtongue
5. Hair - None, good job WETA
6. Book Scene - White Council vs Sauron (it was well done but I disagree with Galadriel being the one to take out Sauron, should have been Saruman)
7. Original Scene - Legolas killing Bolg
8. Credit Song - I See Fire
9. Weapon - None, WETA did a great job as usual
10. CGI - Legolas doing that stepping stone thing

Good thread! [In reply to] Can't Post

It is about time for me to post something again.

BEST
Movie: AUJ is my favorite fantasy film of all time.
Character: Bilbo brings me smiles, Bard brings me tears
Line: "You're a very fine person, Mr. Baggins, and I'm very fond of you, but you are only quite a little fellow in a wild world after all" and "If more people valued home above gold, the world would be a merrier place"
Costume: Fili's war jacket, BOTFA
Hair: Fili's
Book scene: "Good morning", from AUJ
Original scene: "You were always my king, you used to know this", from BOTFA
Credit song: Song of the Lonely Mountain, AUJ
Weapon: Fili's swords, AUJ and DOS
CGI: Goblins, AUJ

And now...

WORST
Movie: DOS, too boring at some parts
Character: Legolas shouldn't be in the trilogy
Line: So many s*** is said by the elves, but probably Tauriel's "There no love in you"
Costume: I don't know...
Hair: Radagast's?
Book scene: The entire Mirkwood sequence, it just too weak compared to the book's version, which is bloody scary
Original scene: Thorin and the Golden Floor, BOTFA. It is so... ridiculous.
Credit song: I See Fire, by Justin Bieber
Weapon: Oin's staff, AUJ (is that a staff?)
CGI: Azog, Azog, Azog

My Top 10 [In reply to] Can't Post

Apparently I'm not good at coming up with just one.

BEST
1. Movie - Battle of the Five Armies (with AUJ very close behind, very hard to compare them)
2. Character - Bilbo Baggins. I actually think I have a similar personality to him at times haha and was blown away by the acting in BOTFA.
3. Line - Roughly "Where were you?" "Looking ahead." "What brought you back?" "Looking behind."
4. Costume - I like most of the Elvish armor, especially Thranduil and Elrond. I also like Legolas's "at home" costume before he switches to his LOTR clothes.
5. Hair - Erm... Beorn? Dain? There aren't many characters who I looked at and thought "Nice hair, yo."
6. Book Scene - Gandalf and Bilbo's first meeting. Riddles in the Dark. Inside Information. Bard and Thorin talking at the gate. Many, many scenes.
7. Original Scene - Bilbo whispering "the eagles" to Thorin's body made me cry, no shame. Also Bilbo saying farewell to the Dwarves at Erebor's gate is easily one of the most emotional things in the series for me. And for action sequences, nothing tops the Barrels and the War Chariot. Oh, and the standoff in Lake-Town between Thorin, Bard, and the Master.
8. Credit Song - The Last Goodbye (I'm terrible with goodbyes in real life and in fiction so the song basically hurt me haha)
9. Weapon -
10. CGI - I really like the CGI for the Great Goblin. So gross and realistic. Also, Smaug obviously, and the DOS/BOTFA rendition of Azog.

WORST
1. Movie - Desolation of Smaug (still great, but a bit too fast paced in theatrical form)
2. Character - Probably Alfrid. I get why he's there, but I wasn't quite as engaged with his stuff as I was with others.
3. Line - "But he does not command my heart."
4. Costume - I'm not sure. This is more a detail, but I think it would be more effective if only one Orc had flayed Dwarf faces on their clothes, as opposed to having Yazneg, Azog, and I think Bolg all have them.
5. Hair - The Master. Just because.
6. Book Scene - I think they could have done the Beorn's Hall scenes better. The extended version is better, but it still just seems too quick.
7. Original Scene - The Shore of the Long Lake scenes. I don't know why, but when I first saw the movie I wasn't as engaged right here. I'm not even really sure how to explain it.
8. Credit Song - I See Fire. Still a great song, just not as good as the other two I think.
9. Weapon - Um... Ori's slingshot? I don't know.
10. CGI - The compositing behind Radagast in the Warg Chase, Dwalin's close-up in the barrel chase, and Bard when the wagon flies down the street.

We should do this for Lord of the Rings as well!

For a Friday afternoon break... [In reply to] Can't Post

BEST
1. Movie: DOS
2. Character: Dain
3. Line: "How do you like those? The old twirly-whirlies! Ha-ha, ya buggers!" Dain in BOTFA
4. Costume: Anything Thranduil wears.
5. Hair: Thorin has the best, but I want to give a nod to Nori.
6. Book Scene: arriving at Beorn's house, two-by-two
7. Original Scene: tuff one. I'd say the chariott scene in BATFA.
8. Credit Song: Neil Finn, AUJ
9. Weapon: Orcrist
10. CGI: Gollum

WORSE
1. Movie: BOTFA (although I still like it very much - I just like the other two more)
2. Character: Alfrid
3. Line: Saruman complaining of Radagast's excessive use of mushrooms and yellow teeth. Horrible.
4. Costume: Beorn's shirt.
5. Hair: Ori's bowl cut.
6. Book Scene: The Battle itself - too brief
7. Original Scene: Thorin's inner battle in DOS where he "drowns" in the gold.
8. Credit Song: None of them.
9. Weapon: Ori's sad slingshot.
10. CGI : the troll who gets his head stuck to Bifur's head.

Top Ten Best

1. AUJ

2. DOS

3. The Dwarves singing in front of Bilbo's fireplace.

4. Lord Elrond, his black horse and Rivendale

5. Thorin and Azog's battle sequence and the Eagles.

6. Tauriel heals Kili and brings forth the White Light of Forever.

7. Thorin almost murders Bilbo over the Arkenstone, then sees a shadow in his peripheral vision and sees Smaug. This shock brings him back to himself.

8. Lord Elrond reads the Moon Runes.

9. The cup Bilbo carries around in Erebor, which finally wakes Smaug up and almost gets them all killed.

10. King Thranduil

There are so many more!

Top Ten Worst

1. Bot5A. Not in its entirety, but much of it.

2. Alfred and his giant face.

3. Bot5A's portrayal of Dain.

4. The Goblin King.

5. The length of the Goblin King sequence.

6. Saurman's consistent badmouthing of Radagast. He has no idea what Radagast has been doing for Aule's wife, whose name eludes me at the moment, for King Thranduil and for Galadriel.

7. Bot5A's shrunken rendition of Thorin's funeral and Dain's coronation.

8. The absence of Beorn in BOt5A. His role is crucial in the battle, and not a word about it.

9. The verbal exchanges between King Thranduil and Dain in Bot5A. Ugg!

10. I just could not get used to the boar thing in Bot5A.

Please, call me Ve.

yes, this adaptation is truly disgusting... [In reply to] Can't Post

and as far as I am concerned, anything that I could have considered a positive has been completely buried beneath a mountainous heap of complete and utter garbage. While watching it, I was only vaguely reminded of the simple but elegant charm of the original story, and was left with the realisation that it is sadly a product of a different time. That subtle magic that has allowed it to endure is lost to this modern age, and in most likelihood can and will never be reproduced.
