I think she could have done justice to that role. [In reply to] Can't Post

She certainly has the fighting chops, and can do 'reserved' very well.

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

I dunno. Based on her performance in the British Avengers movie as Emma Peel, I don't think she could manage the accent.

I remember that rumor. [In reply to] Can't Post

She was supposed to star with then husband Ethan Hawke as Faramir.

“Begone, foul dwimmerlaik, lord of carrion! Leave the dead in peace!"
"Come not between the Nazgul and his prey! Or he will not slay thee in thy turn. He will bear thee away to the houses of lamentation, beyond all darkness, where thy flesh shall be devoured, and thy shrivelled mind be left naked to the Lidless Eye."
"Do what you will; but I will hinder it, if I may."
"Hinder me? Thou fool. No living man may hinder me!"
"But no living man am I! I am Eowyn, daughter of Theodwyn!”
"Er, really? My mother's name was Theodwyn, too!"
"No way!"
"Way!"
"Wow! Let's stop fighting and be best friends!"
"Cool!!"

Yes, that was the rumor. [In reply to] Can't Post

There was a bit of a mixed reception of that idea, but it wasn't as controversial as the "Sean Connery as Gandalf" idea which was in full force about that time.

Personally, I think we ended up with better casting than if they'd gotten some of their first choices. In fact, I suspect that LOTR might not have been such an epic "surprise" success if it had been cast full of Hollywood A-listers. I'm certain I would have liked it less. When it comes to fantasy, I find that too many associations with other roles prevents my total immersion and the necessary suspension-of-disbelief. There's a tipping point where a movie becomes about the story serving the stars rather than actors portraying a story.

Silverlode

Roads go ever ever on
Under cloud and under star
Yet feet that wandering have gone
Turn at last to home afar.
Eyes that fire and sword have seen
And horror in the halls of stone
Look at last on meadows green
And trees and hills they long have known.

"Shons of the Shteward" [In reply to] Can't Post

Wasn't that a funny you came up with?

Yeah, it seemed everyone felt only Connery could play Gandalf.

As for the husband/wife team of Thurman and Hawke, I'm kinda glad, otherwise people today would be going "Faramir and Eowyn? Pity it didn't last."
