So, with the IMDb boards shut down...

...I wonder if we will see a significant uptick in traffic/membership here?

I'm assuming it was some sort of business decision. Actually, the tone could get rancorous over there but the three LotR boards were relatively sane over time. At one point things had gotten unpleasant there and that's when I first came over here. After a while, though, I checked back in and found that a few of my "colleagues" (incl. the OP) had kept their heads while others were losing theirs and the IMDb became an enjoyable, if occasionally rowdy, place for conversation. I hope to see more of my associates here.

From what I've read so far, it's being attributed to being partly a business decision and partly the deteriorating quality of some of the discussions there. I was not a contributer there, but I often read the Discussions. A number of folks from TORn used to post there and as might be expected the LOTR films had great discussion sections. Maybe there will be an uptick in movie discussions here again as a result, but I find it sad that it had to come at the expense of IMDB's boards and the loss of community the posters had there. I used to look at other films discussions there as well, and while I unfortunately totally believe how toxic some films' discussions became, I didn't find much of that on the film discussions I looked at. On the contrary, I saw some excellent insights and conversations. Apparently they announced it a couple of weeks ago to give users time to save what they wanted off the site and connect with users they wanted to stay in contact with. On shutdown, everything was deleted, no record kept of all the discussions, everything just gone. Yet, they kept the individual movie FAQs, despite the fact that they were written by users. And for instance, the FOTR FAQs were quite detailed and lengthy: ********** FAQ for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) More at IMDbPro » The content of this page was created directly by users and has not been screened or verified by IMDb staff. ********** For anyone interested, there are others looking to fill the void and starting up new sites devoted to movie discussions. I was also posting at the IMDb boards for Peter Jackson's LotR films and was encouraged to come over here. I'm glad I did, though the mood has become prickly at times over certain subjects, I do appreciate the efforts of our mods to keep a lid on things!

There *has* been a recnet uptick in new users. The stats show 40 new users in the last 30 days. I haven't been keeping track of new users by month, but I'd estimate that the number of people registering in the six months prior was more like 10-15 per month. I was wondering about what might be causing the increase. I'm sorry for the loss of what sounds like a great place to talk about the movies, but at the same time I hope many of them find their way here and extend a warm welcome to those that do!

did they close down the IMDb boards because of all the comments going around? I have never joined the IMDb boards, but I have looked over several and there were some nasty comments being said back and forth. Makes me happy we are all respectful of each other here.
"Keen, heart-piercing was her song as the song of the lark that rises from the gates of night and pours its voice among the dying stars, seeing the sun behind the walls of the world; and the song of Lúthien released the bonds of winter, and the frozen waters spoke, and flowers sprang from the cold earth where her feet had passed."

That was probably part of it, but I'm not sure that Amazon wanted the expense of maintaining the IMDb boards any longer.

Hello to my colleague O-s from the "other" board. I'm hoping more of us will find our way here but I haven't noticed anyone else (possibly some people wanted to start fresh and use new names). Anyway, the Road goes ever on....

I had forgotten that until I noticed that his title had reached 'Lorien'.
