Daniel Reeve's First Solo Exhibition Can't Post

Daniel has just announced the exciting news on his official Facebook page, that his first solo exhibition is on at the Kapiti Gallery from 15 February until March 19, 2017. The exhibition will showcase his current work and work from The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Daniel said
Despite being an established artist all these years, I've never had a solo exhibition -- until now. This is a mix of old and new work, and includes paintings, calligraphy and movie paraphernalia -- the famous Middle-earth map and prop replicas from The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Twenty pieces altogether - this image shows just a selection. The exhibition is at Kapiti Gallery, 192 Matai Road, Raumati, until March 19. I'll be at the gallery at 2pm on Saturdays 18 Feb and 25 Feb, demonstrating calligraphy, answering questions, etc. If you have the chance, then definitely go and see it :)

I only wish I could see it! [In reply to] Can't Post

But it's on the other side of the world. I still hope one day to be able to go on one of his sketching tours....

For still there are so many things
that I have never seen:
in every wood and every spring
there is a different green. . .

*wild applause* Good for him!! [In reply to] Can't Post

Oh how I wish I could go there and see his work in person! There's something magical seeing these works in person. When we got to walk among the props, miniatures, costumes and Alan Lee/John Howe artwork at the Lord of the Rings Exhibit in 2005... its like a waking dream.

I'm so thrilled for him!! :D

Daniel Reeve's Maps [In reply to] Can't Post

Reeve's maps are gorgeous. He is responsible for the framed Middle-earth map that I can see at the moment by just looking up (originally a Media Play giveaway with the purchase of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring). Here is a lovely map he produced specifically for the TORn Message Boards:

I'm so glad he has an exhibit of his own, more folks need to be aware of his exquisite work.

Me too! [In reply to] Can't Post

It makes me happy every time I look at it.

Silverlode

Roads go ever ever on
Under cloud and under star
Yet feet that wandering have gone
Turn at last to home afar.
Eyes that fire and sword have seen
And horror in the halls of stone
Look at last on meadows green
And trees and hills they long have known.

I remember that exhibition.... [In reply to] Can't Post

...if it's the one that travelled round the world. I saw it in the Science Museum in London in 2003, a few months before Return of the King came out. It was breathtaking - I remember standing in awe of Theoden's armour and for some reason the texture of Galadriel's sleeve fabric stands out as clearly in my mind as if I saw it yesterday. Being so close to the actual things is quite different from seeing pictures of them - the detail and the workmanship.

I wish they'd put on an exhibition like that again - and I hope Daniel Reeve's is a great success.

that I have never seen:
in every wood and every spring

Yes! [In reply to] Can't Post

The mud on Boromir's boots as he lay dead in the elven boat, the textures and details of the costumes, walking up to the Morgul blade suspended in the air... that jagged edge looks more ghastly than in the film. Seeing Sam's large and small (forced perspective) pack side-by-side and the detail of Frodo's suspenders. Awesome!

I wish they'd send that exhibition around again; but I think its found a home in Wellington, IIRC.

The map! [In reply to] Can't Post

Somewhere I have a photo of me with Daniel, holding a replica of the map, my finger pointing to my own name in the margin. I had the great pleasure of meeting him in Wellington in 2008, on a Red Carpet tour. He has to be one of the most "amiable", to use Jane Austen's word, people I've ever met.

Where now the horse and the rider? Where is the horn that was blowing?
Where is the helm and the hauberk, and the bright hair flowing?
Where is the hand on the harpstring, and the red fire glowing?
Where is the spring and the harvest and the tall corn growing?
They have passed like rain on the mountain, like a wind in the meadow;
The days have gone down in the West behind the hills into shadow....

Thanks so much for the stroll down memory lane. Smile What a great trip that was, and such wonderful people in our group. Plus it was an honor and a privilege to make the acquaintance of the Red Carpet family.
