A very wise friend of mine once complained that I excel, if that is a fair description, in my efforts to bring a sense of bathos into every discussion. I find that tendency increasing unworthy in this enlightened forum. I promise to do better.
I've been impressed by this spontaneous discussion of The Ring and its nuanced influence on bearers. Those who argue that Tolkien is a simple story of black and white good vs evil might do well to read these few posts.
The subtle and insidious infiltration of evil into otherwise fine folk is a major theme in the LOTR, and one we should all take to heart. Paranoia and covetousness is contrary to the nature of each bearer, as is avarice and desire for dominion. So the power of The Ring struggles to control the Hobbits as much as they struggle against its power.
I am Khim akin to Mim.
