Huh, that didn't work, looks like I'll just have to do it the usual way and invoke the Editor! All set, gramma.

"I know exactly what he'll tell you: lies. He was no different from any other officer in the wardroom. They were all disloyal. I tried to run the ship properly, by the book, but they fought me at every turn. The crew wanted to walk around with their shirt tails hanging out; that's all right, let them. Take the tow line: defective equipment, no more, no less, but they encouraged the crew to go around scoffing at me and spreading wild rumors about steaming in circles, and, and, and then "Old Yellowstain". I was to blame for Lt. Maryk's incompetence and poor seamanship. Lt. Maryk was the perfect officer, but not Cpt. Queeg. Ah, but the strawberries: that's, that's where I had them. They laughed at me and made jokes, but I proved beyond a shadow of a doubt and with, with geometric logic that, that a duplicate key to the wardrobe icebox did exist, and I'd have produced that key if they hadn't pulled the Caine out of action. I, I, I know now that they were trying to protect some fellow officer and . . . Naturally, I, I can only cover these things from memory. If I've left anything out, why, just ask me specific questions, and I'll be glad to answer them, one by one." If Humphrey Bogart had been alive and in his prime, which role in The Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit do you think he'd have been right for?

He's 101. I learned that earlier this evening while doing a little research on The Caine Mutiny.

If Humphrey Bogart had been alive and in his prime, which role in The Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit do you think he'd have been right for? Frankly, none of them. Much as I love me some Bogey, I don't think he could have hacked the accent. And he was too short for Aragorn or even Boromir anyway.

I can see Bogart hitting all the right notes of Denethor from self-righteous indignation, to cold cruelty, to fierce madness. On the other hand, I can hear the paranoic Fred C. Dobbs alternately piteously whining and sadistically threatening as Gollum. (And Alfonso Bedoya would make a great, if politically incorrect, orc.) Still, the thought of Humphey Bogart as Merry, Peter Ustinov as Pippin, Aldo Ray as Sam, Leo G. Carroll as Gandalf, Basil Rathbone as Saruman, Joan Bennet as Galadriel, John Smith as Aragorn, John Baer as Boromir, Gloria Talbot as Arwen, and Adolf as Sauron is intriguing.

Oh, nice! And isn't there a time or two in The Lord of the Rings where one orc demands to see another's insignia?

Suddenly you've got me imagining a Warner Bros. production of The Hobbit if it was made in the 1940s. I'll stick with your pick of Leo Carroll as Gandalf - Elisha Cook Jr. as Bilbo Baggins - Leo G. Carroll as Gandalf - Humphrey Bogart as Thorin Oakenshield - Patric Knowles as Kili - Peter Ustinov as Fili - Peter Lorre as Nori - Eugene Pallette as Bombur - Sidney Greenstreet as the Great Goblin - Alan Hale, Sr. as Beorn - Basil Rathbone as the Master of Lake-town - Edward G. Robinson as Bolg of the North. - Errol Flynn as Bard the Bowman

Double role for Lorre as Gollum.

How could I forget Gollum?! Yes, Lorre as Gollum; maybe Herbert Mundin as Nori (mince I'm borrowing so much from the cast of the 1938 The Adventures of Robin Hood).
