Ah! But what else could he do? [In reply to] Can't Post

If the company couldn't get through the Secret Door (and they had already tried and failed to break it down) then their only alternative would have been to tunnel through the sealed Front Gate, which would have surely alerted Smaug! The only other thing that Thorin could do was to try again the following year, or the year after that, or the year after that, when ever Durin's Day came again.

This is all true, but .... [In reply to] Can't Post

why walk away at the very second the last rays of the sun disappeared? Dwarves are stubborn and obstinate. One thing that life is teaching me is that just when I think there is no solution to a problem, sometimes something unforeseen will shine a new light on it and make for a possible solution, so it is important to not lose hope. Why not camp out for the night, quietly, and figure out their next move. Thorin would have never given up so quickly or would be in such a huge hurry to leave Erebor without first thinking his way through the situation. And Gandalf and all those Dwarves knew that they probably would not have years to figure out what was to be done about Smaug.

Please, call me Ve.

The Dwarves' Camp [In reply to] Can't Post

The Dwarves might have been doing exactly that--returning to a camp at the base of the Mountain. At that moment, though, they were in despair, having no immediate alternative to their planned course.
