Many happy returns to a gentleman and a scholar [In reply to] Can't Post

One of the things I find most admirable about Mr. Tolkien is his modesty. To him it's always been about his father's work. Not many men choose to work so completely in their father's shadow, yet Christopher Tolkien has distinguished himself in literary history for doing so with devotion, clarity, rigor, and a very high standard of integrity.

Happy birthday, Mr. Tolkien, and once again, thank you for all you've done to bring your father's many unpublished works to life!

Christopher makes it easy to forget him [In reply to] Can't Post

Meaning he's so devoted to bringing his father's work to us that his own contribution to Middle-earth is so overshadowed. Without him, we'd barely have anything, and I think it's easy to forget that. So, many thanks to Christopher! And happy birthday!

"Behold! the hope of Elvenland,
the fire of Fëanor, Light of Morn
before the sun and moon were born,
thus out of bondage came at last,
from iron to mortal hand it passed."

Yeah, think of no Silmarillion, no Unfinished Tales, no HOME... [In reply to] Can't Post

Some fans are content with the Hobbit and LOTR, but I am not. We all owe CT a great thanks!

Happy Birthday! [In reply to] Can't Post

We owe him a great deal for all the years of excellent work he's put into his work as his father's trustee. We are much the richer for it.

Roads go ever ever on
Under cloud and under star
Yet feet that wandering have gone
Turn at last to home afar.
Eyes that fire and sword have seen
And horror in the halls of stone
Look at last on meadows green
And trees and hills they long have known.

We may not always agree with Christopher Tolkien, but we owe him a great debt.

much joy in the contemplation of, and his continued efforts toward, his labor of love.

He's the same age as my dad, which I did not know before now.

Happy Birthday... [In reply to] Can't Post

...and many happy returns to Christopher Tolkien - and thanks.

I can't even imagine a world without the Silmarillion and the myriad other Tolkien books published since JRRT died. No son could have done more to preserve and honour a father's legacy.

For still there are so many things
that I have never seen:
in every wood and every spring
there is a different green. . .

Happy birthday, indeed! // [In reply to] Can't Post

Happiness: money matters, but less than we think and not in the way that we think. Family is important and so are friends, while envy is toxic -- and so is excessive thinking. Beaches are optional. Trust is not. Neither is gratitude. - The Geography of Bliss by Eric Weiner as summarized by Lily Fairbairn. And a bit of the Hobbit reading thrown in never hurts. - NottaSackville

When JRRT Turned 80 [In reply to] Can't Post

In 1972, when JRR Tolkien turned 80, the Mythopoeic Society (the major Tolkien fan and scholarship organization at that time, and still going strong) created a large birthday card for him. On the front was an illustration from the end of 'Leaf by Niggle', with Niggle standing in foreground (facing away from the viewer), his hands extended as he sees the completed Tree of his imagination. The caption was Niggle's line, "It's a gift!" Inside was 'Thank you for _your_ gift!' and as many signatures of Mythopoeic Society members as was practical.

Christopher Tolkien has given us many gifts indeed.
