Vikings in New York! Can't Post

The world's largest Viking ship is currently docked in New York!

However, no burning or looting is expected unless the mead runs out. Smile

Do you know if there will be a book or documentary?

Dang! [In reply to] Can't Post

It's going to be there in-between my trips to the big city. Bummer.

Wow. [In reply to] Can't Post

It's great to know that the ships could make the transatlantic crossing.

But watching the video short, all I could think was how incredibly cold and wet the voyage looked to be for all onboard! I wonder what the sailors wore to avoid hypothermia?

Well, naturally! [In reply to] Can't Post

Whoever heard of a Packer ship? And when was the last time anyone found a Packer sword? As for those Packer raids - ha! My grandmother could beat them off with a broom. Sly LaughLaughLaugh

I'm going to try to do a better job knitting another one using a new colorwork technique. Maybe with more colors.

I was lucky enough to go on board [In reply to] Can't Post

the Draken when she visited Merseyside on an earlier voyage. It was wonderful to see such a fine piece of living history at close quarters. Her mast broke at sea, so she stayed not far from where I live while a new one was made. She was strengthened for the Atlantic voyage, and slightly better crew accommodation provided - though it still looked very spartan to me! The Facebook page has a lot of interesting information and some great vids to watch. Made me seasick just looking at them... hope they haev fair weather on the voyage back to norway - it's been quite a seafaring summer!

...and saw the stabilized remains of the large ship (as well as several others recovered from the nearby fjord, and also the exact reconstructions they've made. The warships could accomodate 60 or more armed warriors!

Crossing the Atlantic is pretty extreme. [In reply to] Can't Post

The colleagues of Erik the Red worked their way along island-hopping. I don't know the longest single reach this ship took, but I doubt they went more than a couple of days without landing. And there's pretty much no way 50 or 60 warriors would be comfortable in one of the warships. But, then, Vikings didn't expect comfort!

I had to google it to see what ships you mean and they look so interesting, both the original remains and the reconstructions. Would love to see that museum! Smile

nice! [In reply to] Can't Post

My experience with viking ships is much smaller: 30 to 40 foot vessels of the Longship Company (longshipco.org). We spent over five days on the Potomac River in 1984, and that was fairly epic. Sleeping on the ground at marinas or kind of propped up against the hull on the floor or thwarts (there is a lyfting deck over the bilges).

I cant imagine doing a transatlantic crossing. Even on a hundred foot vessel the freeboard would be ridiculously low.

But then, about the same time as the Vikings amazing voyage to Lans aux Meadows (sorry, just mangled French) the Ploynesians were crossing the wild reaches of the Pacific in double hulled canoes with no more freeboard than the Vikings.

Insanely skilled sailors all.
