RIP Willy Wonka

Very sad to see today that Gene Wilder has passed away due to complications from Alzheimer's. Whether you remember him best as Willy Wonka, the Frisco Kid, Victor Frankenstein ("that's STEEN!"), or Jim "Waco Kid", the world is a little dimmer and grayer today.
Wilder's nephew Jordan Walker-Pearlman said the comedy legend died late Sunday in Stamford, Conn. from complications from Alzheimer's disease, a condition the actor kept private for three years so as not to disappoint fans. "He simply couldn't bear the idea of one less smile in the world," his nephew said. That's class and I wish I'd written him the fan letter several years ago that I thought of when going through one of my regular viewings of "Willy Wonka". I just finished watching "Blazing Saddles" in tribute and just started "Willy Wonka" (my umpteenth viewing!). Watching the 40th anniversary Blu-ray on a large screen OLED, this is probably about the best I've ever seen or heard it since I first saw it in the theaters. Thank you for the simple joy and laughter you gave us, Mr. Silberman Wilder.

What a class act he was. Of course he was brilliant and funny, but part of why I admired him so much was because of his devotion to Gilda Radner. Their relationship was so beautiful and his dedication to cancer research in her name after her passing was so moving. But, yeah, Young Frankenstein! Doesn't get much funnier than that. And I'm glad you mentioned Frisco Kid; it's often overlooked. No, it's not in the same class as the Mel Brooks films and collaborations with Richard Pryor, but that role as a Polish rabbi on his way to San Francisco, to me anyway, seemed the perfect vehicle for him: sweet and gentle with the hint of manic righteous indignation ready to spring forth when pushed too far. He and Harrison Ford were great together. It's sad, but nice to think of him and Gilda together again.

you never quite knew what he was going to do next. It wasn't over-the-top crazy. It was guy-next-to-you-on-the-bus subtle. He also seemed to see the character in a way that made Pure Imagination real to me. I will never forget seeing it for the first time (at a Drive-in!) and watching as the door opened to the factory floor. As a kid, I wanted to run around and try everything. Now, I watch him. I watch him watching them. In fact, that's how a spent my last viewing - watching Wonka when someone else had the scene. It's fascinating to see how the little reactions build the character.

He's been one of my favorites since I was a kid. I think I enjoy his Willy Wonka even more now than I did as a child - his deadpan, whispering reaction to Augustus Gloop's near-drowning, "Help. Police. Murder." is actually chilling. Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles are just as hysterically funny. "It's alive. It's alive!"

I used to feel quite guilty about how attractive I found his Willy Wonka when watching the film with my daughter! 'Silver Streak' was another of his films I remember fondly.

I'm afraid I'm one of those who loved Gilda Radner, and was so touched by her and Gene's relationship, that I forgot about the poor woman who has been married to Gene and caring for him for more than twenty years. It must be especially painful for her on top of her grief to hear and read fools like me going on about Gene and Gilda being reunited. Deepest sympathies to Karen Boyer.
