Middle-Earth Ultimate Collection: International Shopping Guide

After several gasps about the price of the US version of the so-called "Middle-Earth Ultimate Collection" ($799!) I decided to look abroad: if this edition would be available elsewhere and if there are any less expensive alternatives to the US one. And in fact, I found it. France - "Coffret Middle Earth Extended Edition Premium" The box that is going to be released in France (Nov. 2) looks exactly like the US box. I suppose they will update the graphics with localized titles though. The French box costs 399 EUR which is roughly USD 452, plus shipping. Link: fnac.com Germany - "Mittelerde Ultimate Collection" The German edition is so far only listed by some local German retailers. While Amazon.de already has a listing, it isn't yet available for preorder. The design of the box is also not visible yet. However, what is more interesting, is the price. The German version costs just around 299 EUR! That's USD 339 plus shipping. (Also note that Amazon deducts the sales tax from the price when ordering from outside the EU). And while it is still double-dipping at its best, it's a far more reasonable price for the set. The German box is listed at amazon.de and already available at buecher.de and conrad.de. However, AFAIK, only Amazon ships outside Germany. I will update this post with newer information.

I would think it was April 1 - if I didn't know it wasn't!

Warner Bros. is not calling this an Ultimate Collection--just us.

do you know if a yank like me ordered a French or German edition, it would be dubbed in the local language, correct? Could I turn those off, or would I have to use English sub-titles? Thanks for the great research.

I have quite a few box sets of other things released for the German/Dutch/Italian markets - Once Upon a Time, for example, and a few old BBC adaptations - and in every case they either start with a choice of languages or you can turn off the dubbing or subtitles. Once you're watching it's no different from a disk you'd buy at home. You just have to accept that all the packaging and sometimes the onscreen menu will be in another language. But in this particular set I don't know if the book would also come in another language....

The first Amazon page on the collection that was linked here used the letters 'UCE' - I remember someone asking what they meant. And I've seen the word used pretty widely round the internet....

That has been corrected since the first listing went up. I suppose I should have written that fans in general have been using the term 'Ultimate', not just TORNsibs.

The German version has dropped to 272€! Plus, there is a product pic now. Indeed there is a shelf and the Red Book. However, the packaging will be in German. amazon.de

...and the German version is now priceless, though perhaps that's no surprise. I found myself wondering today if there had been any further news of this since silence descended on these threads - probably because we'd all run out of things to say. Seems UK Amazon isn't even going to stock the set (not that I'm planning to buy but I can't help being curious about where in the price spectrum we would fall). Seems such a pity. If this had included extra material there would probably be a degree of pre-release excitement building - it's not far off now....
