Bifur Needle-Felted Wool Doll

Hello, again! I'm a bit late on getting pictures of this one, but the needle-felted doll of Bifur is all finished. In fact, he and Nori are down at the State Fair (Columbus, Ohio) this week. Bifur actually won 1st Place and Best-of-Show in all of Felting, and Nori won a 2nd Place ribbon. :) Bifur was certainly a challenging doll to make, just because of the amount of detail and precision needed for his costume. He stands 9-1/2" tall and weighs a hefty 4 ounces. He was felted with .40 and .42 gauge needles and features some pretty advanced felting techniques in his costume — along with a lot of leather and embroidery work. I used six different types of wool and fiber to make Bifur. The base of his body is made of dark Romney (though none of it shows), and his head and clothes feature Cotswold, Merino and Blue-Faced Leicester wool and Tibetan Yak fiber. His hair is made from three different shades of "All Cooped Up" wool hair. Bifur's mantel and hand mitts are hand-embroidered vinatge wool fabric. Since Bifur's character is highly influenced by the Wild Boar, we decided to use make the tops of Bifur's boots and arm guards (which are branded in a decorative pattern). We used decorative stone beads that look very like the Wild Boar tusks used on the real costume, and the fur trim on the shoulder mantel is real Wild Peccory (pig) hair! Bifur has four metal tube bead decoartions in his hair, and his axe-head is hand-carved wood painted in a dark metallic colour. To see a Full Fiber Chart of Bifur, just CLICK HERE. I'm posting some photos here, but you can see a lot of them (all larger!) on Bifur's webpage here: http://sarahbethonline.com/fogleberries/bifur.html

Here is a picture of Bifur and Nori at the Fair: And here is a photo of the five "Hobbit Company" dolls that are finished so far! Balin and Dwalin are in the works right now, with Bofur coming soon. Hope to have more photos of another doll to post soon. :) Right now, my Mom and I are working on dyeing some Gotland wool in appropriate "Hobbit" colours. :) Regards, Sarah

Love how you made Bifur! He's really cute, and I love how you positioned his arms, as if he was telling us something in Dwarvish! Always love your posts!
"Keen, heart-piercing was her song as the song of the lark that rises from the gates of night and pours its voice among the dying stars, seeing the sun behind the walls of the world; and the song of Lúthien released the bonds of winter, and the frozen waters spoke, and flowers sprang from the cold earth where her feet had passed."

So we were at the Ohio State Fair today, browsing around the arts and crafts building and THERE THEY WERE - Bifur and Nori, looking awesome and surrounded by well-deserved ribbons. They look wonderful in person and the workmanship is amazing. It was a thrill to see your work up close, and what fun to see a little bit of TORN at the fair. Big congrats on all the prizes.

Hello, again! Thanks to all of you who responded. I'm really enjoying working on these dwarf dolls, and Bifur was a lot of fun to make. When we started this project, my sister and I spent some time deciding on the position of each doll. We tried to think of "the" moment for each dwarf that pops into our minds when you say their name . . . and that's the position that I'm making them in. Elarie: That is so cool that you saw them at the Fair! Thanks for posting your picture. I always wonder if anyone at the fair sees them and knows who the dwarves (or other Hobbit characters) actually are. :) I'd really like to have Balin and Dwalin in next year . . . but that will totally depend on if they are both finished by then . . . and on who else is finished by then. :) Mom and I have been working on dyeing some wool with Kool-Aid in some appropriate "Hobbity" colors. I bought a quantity of Gotland roving, as that is the basic type of wool used in the films and costumes. So, we're dyeing some of it colors to use on dwarves (and later on Hobbits!).
