The title of books

One thing which I noticed upon the read through of Lotr was this. All of the chapters have titles. All of the books in the trilogy have titles albeit controversial ones. But the individual six books do not. They are just referred to as books one to six. Now then Tolkien did intend the Lotr to be a sixology is it? So it seems a bit strange that the individual six books do not have a title. Unless of course they do somewhere. Still, I thought it might be fun to do this ourselves. For example, the Fellowship of the Ring seems to refer more to book two for me.

Tolkien did break the novel down into six books, but he wanted it published as a single volume.

but when Allen & Unwin declared it would have to be split up because of the post-war paper shortage, he suggested publishing it in six as he had divided the books himself. In the Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien, he suggested these titles: Book I: The Ring Sets Out Book II: The Ring Goes South Book III: The Treason of Isengard Book IV: The Ring Goes East Book V: The War of the Ring Book VI: The End of the Third Age

Having worked for publishers, I have a lot of sympathy for Allen & Unwin wanting to limit their financial exposure by not publishing it as one great tome, just in case it bombed despite their own enthusiasm for it. But - the end of FOTR is actually a great place to leave readers reaching for (or waiting for) the next published volume. Maybe it is a better place that the end of Flight to the Ford. We shall never know, of course but I wonder whether binding the books into pairs wasn't actually the best solution at the time...

Book IV: Trials of Two Heroes Book VI Destruction and Tall Ships Wow! Evocative word choices there, Brace. I suppose you'd have to read the books to fully appreciate them (by which I mean to a 1st-time reader, they might seem just normal), but especially to think of Book VI named "Destruction and Tall Ships" makes me think of the Grey Havens finale with a sad sigh, that last ship sailing away leaving Sam in tears.

Those titles aren't full of spoilers like The Silmarillion chapter titles, at least.

So Tolkien was showing a little more sense here. I may never forgive JRR for how he named The Sil's chapters, because of course when I first got the book I read the Table of Contents, and it was quite a downer to see, even though I didn't know what Doriath was, that it would be ruined. Or that Gondolin, which I only knew the name of, was going to Fall in this volume. Fortunately "The Silmarillion" was spoiler-free as a title, and it wasn't "How an Evil Power Killed Wonderful Elves and Destroyed All the Wonderful Things They Made."

The Silmarillion as a book was edited and published posthumously by Christopher Tolkien, with assistance from fantasy fiction writer Guy Gavriel Kay, based on countless variants in his notes over a 40-year period. It's unlikely that all the titles were JRRT's names.

That one did have nothing do do with the Ring, save one chapter with Gandalf talking about stragety. Not sure about book five. That one did have the War of the Ring. Which might have been a good chapter title for it. Remember that the entire thing was both inspired by the Ring the idea been to keep Sauron's attention away from the Ringbearer. I like your title of he final book, however.
