Our read-through of Lord of the Rings (in which we work through the book discussing a chapter each week) resumes on 4 September 2016. Here is the schedule so far: BOOK VI start date chapter leader 04-Sep-16 I The Tower of Cirith Ungol squire 11-Sep-16 II The Land of Shadow InTheChair 18-Sep-16 III Mount Doom noWizardme 25-Sep-16 IV The Field of Cormallen Oliphaunt 02-Oct-16 V The Steward and the King Elizabeth 09-Oct-16 VI Many Partings Mironiel 16-Oct-16 VII Homeward Bound 23-Oct-16 VIII The Scouring of the Shire enanito 30-Oct-16 IX The Grey Havens 06-Nov-16 1 Concerning Hobbits (from the Prologue, plus hobbit-related items from the Appendices) 13-Nov-16 2 Numenor (from Appendix A.I. i - iii) 20-Nov-16 3 Gondor and the Heirs of Anarion (from Appendix A.I. iv) 27-Nov-16 4 The Tale of Aragorn and Arwen ((from Appendix A.I. v) 04-Dec-16 5 House of Eorl (from Appendix A.II) 11-Dec-16 6 Durin's Folk (from Appendix A.III) 18-Dec-16 7 LAST WEEK : "It's Over. It's Done" - a week of AOB, and a chance for folks to post thoughts & reflections on this, the Sixth Reading Room LOTR Read-through. => If you'd like to lead one of the remaining chapters or Appendices, please volunteer by replying to this thread. It helps everyone if you can title your post with the name of your chapter in CAPITALS - (e.g. THE GREY HAVENS). That makes it easier to see what else has been taken, and prevents this thread from becoming confusing too soon. (Happens in the end anyway - this thread replaces http://newboards.theonering.net/...i?post=893293#893293 , which has become confusing). => If you might like to volunteer but you're not sure what being a chapter leader involves, read this: http://newboards.theonering.net/...i?post=884122#884122 You can,of course also read some old posts from the Read-through to get an idea of what goes on. => If you volunteered to lead a chapter but now can't for some reason, please let me know. Things happen and plans go amiss, so no-one should blame a volunteer who can't in the end deliver due to impossible circumstances (Frodo at Mount Doom, perhaps ). But its very helpful to have some notice, if that's possible. => My idea for the Appendices is that we will use them as the basis for themed discussions as you see - the family trees, annals and linguistic guides are free for all to raid as required, rather than being appendices that I forgot to schedule. I'm intending the leader of 'Concerning Hobbits' to look at hobbit lore in the appendices, but also to raid the Prologue "Concerning Hobbits" section at the very beginning of the book. => Any other questions, please do ask!
~~~~~~ volunteers are still needed to lead chapters for our upcoming Book VI ROTK read-through (Book V is all signed up, thanks!) http://newboards.theonering.net/...i?post=904377#904377 A set of links to our Book III discussions can be found here: http://newboards.theonering.net/...i?post=886383#886383 A set of links to the Book IV discussions are here: http://newboards.theonering.net/...i?post=899201#899201 A wonderful list of links to Boook II, Book I and previous read-throughs is curated by our very own 'squire' here http://users.bestweb.net/...-SixthDiscussion.htm
i will do the GREY HAVENS. i wish i could rewind part of my life so as to allow me time to participate in the lotr read through. this would have been my first read through, and i was greatly looking forward to it. all the issues in my personal life demanded so much time from me -- i hope folks still want to do another read through in the future. cheers -- /
aka. fili orc-enshield +++++++++++++++++++ the scene, as i understand it, is exceptionally well-written. fili (in sort of a callback to the scene with the eagles), calls out "thorRIIIIIIN!!!" just as he sees the pale orc veer in for the kill. he picks up the severed arm of an orc which is lying on the ground, swings it up in desperation, effectively blocking the pale orc's blow. and thus, forever after, fili is known as "fili orc-enshield." this earns him deep respect from his hard-to-please uncle. as well as a hug. kili wipes his boots on the pale orc's glory box. -- maciliel telpemairo
remember they are the GREY Havens, not the BLUE Havens, so you won't find any Blue Wizards there waiting for you at the end of the book. Just a friendly warning.
... the power of a chapter leader to take the discussion in unexpected directions and discover hidden in the text previously unforeseen gems. Perhaps the Blue Wizards can indeed be found!
I would be happy to lead a read through if any more volunteers are needed! I wouldn't mind what chapter/appendix. Although I am new to these forums so maybe someone else would have more knowledge of what was needed.
It was a foggy day in London, and the fog was heavy and dark. Animate London, with smarting eyes and irritated lungs, was blinking, wheezing, and choking; inanimate London was a sooty spectre, divided in purpose between being visible and invisible, and so being wholly neither. It is said by the Eldar that in water there lives yet the echo of the Music of the Ainur more than in any substance that is in this Earth; and many of the Children of Ilúvatar hearken still unsated to the voices of the Sea, and yet know not for what they listen.
You would be most welcome. Unless you prefer something else, why not lead the first chapter that is free - 16-Oct-16 VII Homeward Bound apologies again for missing that you had offered to help!
I would be very glad to do that chapter! Is there anything important I need to know about how to do it?
