A few thoughts on The Hobbit on UHD/4K... Can't Post

Some thoughts of whether we are likely to see a UHD release of The Hobbit see the light of day, with its pros and cons.

1) Resolution

Pro: The Hobbit was shot with Red Epic cameras in 5K resolution, so it offers theoretical possibility to offer real 4K resolution and not those upscale rip-offs Warner likes to release on UHD.

Con: The entire postproduction pipeline was in 2K: not only the SFX shots but also normal shots which were then subject to color grading. Unless someone decides to go back and give it "The Martian" treatment, there is a 99% possibility that it in fact WOULD be one of those upscale rip-offs Warner likes to release on UHD.

2) High Dynamic Range
Pro: UHD advocates point out that UHD is not about UHD at all (given the number of aforementioned upscale rip-offs), and HDR is the actual killer feature. The Hobbit could actually profit of this.
Con: HDR changes the visual perception of a film. I don't suppose Peter Jackson would allow it to happen without his approval (even the controversial LOTR 1 SEE BluRay remaster was supervised both by PJ and the DOP Andrew Lesnie). Sadly, Andrew Lesnie died last year, so it would be up to PJ alone to approve a HDR treatment. So it'd be rather complicated to get an approved HDR process.

3) High Frame Rate
Pro: in theatres, The Hobbit was shown in 48 fps (High Frame Rate, HFR). On UHD, there is a possibility to include HFR for the first time on home media (BluRay specs wouldn't allow it).
Con: Actually, HFR is quite controversal and not everybody likes it. Question is, if a film is mastered for 48fps on UHD, can it also be optionally turned off, in order to have a more cinematic experience? Or are you stuck with it?

4) 3D.
Pro: -
Con: No 3D for UHD.

5) Dolby Atmos
Pro: The Hobbit did in fact feature a Dolby Atmos mix.
Con: -

Conclusion: So far, I see no real reason for The Hobbit to be released on UHD. Which would probably happen anyway, unless PJ vetoes it.
