Has anyone ever heard of The Story of Kullervo? It's the tragic story of Kullervo an orphan boy with supernatural powers. Kullervo was a charcter from the First Age and the ancestor of Túrin Turambar from the Children of Hurin.

As you may suspect, the subject has come up several times since the book was published. There is also an ongoing discussion of the original Finnish legend going on in the Off Topic forum.

The book was a disappointment to me.

There is the poem, which is Tolkien's retelling of the legend, not a full translation. It is not very long or, I fear, very satisfying, and then there are notes on the drafts and two essays (text of Tolkien lectures) which are more interesting, but virtually identical. From the cover notes: "Tolkien wrote that The Story of Kullervo was 'the germ of my attempt to write legends of my own'." It is interesting from that point of view, and for anyone attempting to read everything he wrote, but does not stand alone.
