I think I see an Entwife! [In reply to] Can't Post

Or at least I see a possible origin for the Ents/Entwives.

Very Cool. [In reply to] Can't Post

Love the one of him sitting on the bench,( Really seems to echo his genius as the professor and creator of our beloved Middle-earth!) and the one of him in his younger days with the Entish design.Smile

"Keen, heart-piercing was her song as the song of the lark that rises from the gates of night and pours its voice among the dying stars, seeing the sun behind the walls of the world; and the song of Lúthien released the bonds of winter, and the frozen waters spoke, and flowers sprang from the cold earth where her feet had passed."

The picture of the Professor sitting on the bench reading a book reminded me of Aragorn sitting in Rivendell also reading a book. I found myself tilting my head to see what it was ;) Thanks so much for sharing these! He's such a wonderful man!

Has ANYONE seen that photo of a "young JRR"? Is it real? [In reply to] Can't Post

This one? https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/...cb1add8be6c63a4e.jpg

I haven't ever seen it (that is neither here nor there! I am not a Tolkien scholar, LOL) and am wondering if someone can verify that it is JRRT and that it is not photoshopped?

Can you give the link where you found it?

Very likely not [In reply to] Can't Post

Good call, a.s.

I have been admiring this photo portfolio too, but the one of him in front of the tree-being did give me some pause - being perfect to us fans, but with the sculptural art not really in the style of anything a young Oxford scholar might stumble across in Edwardian England.

This site suggests that the photo is a montage by a Tolkien fan. The caption to the photo says, "(J.R.R. Tolkien, montage and sculpture by Andrea Bonazzi)" [bold by squire].

I would like to know more, though.

I was hoping it was a schoolboy photo, perhaps, on a "field trip" or vacation.

Yikes [In reply to] Can't Post

No. No. No. It is not totally cool. Well done is badly done when it is well done fakery.

I await correction from more authoritative souls. But if it is faked up, it is crap. People should not do this. Tolkien had a life, a real life, and real photographs are one way we can see into that life, and so get a handle on the richness of his fiction.

To start photoshopping JRRT's childhood is to turn him into Elijah Wood and Sean Astin in their character roles - a video celebrity who doesn't really exist but is just part of the 'Tolkien Cultural Phenomenon'. Arggh.

LOL

I meant it was a well-done forgery, that was all. For a photoshop or montage or whatever, it's pretty well done. I am not sure but that, if some of us were not obsessively examining all things Tolkien for so long, we would recognize it as a fake.

Thanks, that has a date on the picture "montage" that can clearly be seen [In reply to] Can't Post

The date on the montages is clearer on this website (2012 is clearly marked on the picture "montage"). However, I predict that this will now get posted ad infinitum all over the web as an actual pic of Tolkien.

And one can only be so many places repairing mistakes on the internets!! LOL

I'm glad someone said something - [In reply to] Can't Post

I've been sitting on my hands, not wanting to pour cold water on everyone's fun; but the thing is that sites like pinterest - (and others; there's one which claims that recordings by JRR have been "DISCOVERED", whereas they've been on sale since 1967 and they're still copyrighted) - sites such as these will Take whatever they can, without knowing what they have, and throw photos, recordings, whatever, around the net, gathering 'oohs and 'aahs' and kudos, for Someone Else's work.

I've seen all of these photos; I've got them either in books or (in the case of the photos of Ronald and Edith, taken on the occassion of their 50th wedding anniversary), in the form of a set of photos which I bought in Oxford some time ago; because believe it or not, these are still copyrighted by the estate of the photographer, Pamela Chandler.
