AUJ deserved an oscar for visual effects Can't Post

Seriously, The Life of Pi?

Also, why wasn't BOTFA nominated?

nah [In reply to] Can't Post

The visual effects in these movies were nothing to crow about. They looked like every other modern day hollywood fantasy movie overloaded with cgi.

I haven't seen the other contenders, but really enjoyed AUJ. Smile

Probably because... [In reply to] Can't Post

..the previous films had won so many Oscars and these were perceived as 'more of the same'.

I would say that all three films deserved nominations at least. Smaug in Erebor and Smaug's destruction of Laketown were certainly worth awards

I think film 1 and 2 probably should have won in their respective years [In reply to] Can't Post

Slightly fake-looking gold from Smaug and all. All three of them should have been nominated, of course, but 2014 put out some astounding effects work from many different films.

All 3 Deserved It [In reply to] Can't Post

Smaug alone should have gotten DOS the easy win IMO (or at least second place to Man of Steel - the effects in that movie were amazing)

AUJ and DOS deserved the Oscar... [In reply to] Can't Post

Out of all three in the trilogy, I think AUJ has the best effects even though Smaug was great in DOS. Those two deserved the Oscars.
I don't want to say it looks like a video game again, but BOFA did not deserve it all in my opinion.

If nothing else, DoS deserved some recognition for it's realization of Smaug.

I'm agreeing with wizzardly on this one. [In reply to] Can't Post

Smaug was the VFX highlight of the trilogy. The rest of the effects were pretty mediocre.

And I am not. [In reply to] Can't Post

Gollum, though already an amazing work done in the previous trilogy, was leaps and bounds better than his LOTR rendering. There's also the Great Goblin in AUJ. The frozen lake in BOFA was amazing. And many, many others. Cool

Yes, Gollum was fantastic too. [In reply to] Can't Post

Although, if you know what I mean, he was shinier in TH, which sounds weird (and looks weird...) but whatever. Smile

Can you explain what you mean with shinier? Do you mean younger? In my opinion Gollum looks just as good ( if not better) in the Hobbit as he is in LOTR.

What are you talking about? Gollum has no baby oil on him. Gollum looks like he did in LOTR but just 60 years younger. And the CGI is even better in the Hobbit on Gollum.

Looks like a younger Gollum found inside a dark mountain-cave [In reply to] Can't Post

Surrounded by a small, slimy pool of water that he had made his home.

As opposed to being found older, more beaten up, more desparate and clawing his way up the rocks of the Emyn Muil.

Makes sense, no?

Slimy, oily [In reply to] Can't Post

Like TheOnlyOneAroundWithAnySense and wizzardly described it, respectively. It may have been simply that The Hobbit was HD and I never really saw LOTR in proper HD, but I think the entire Hobbit trilogy looked "shinier" than LOTR.

There's truth in that appraisal of the aesthetic [In reply to] Can't Post

I believe it is presented as so to harken to the more fairy tale-ish nature of the story, before the events of "LotR" hammer down some harsher realities and life-or-death-for-all circumstances upon these characters.
