We don't know that, and we don't need any explanation. The company spent at least two weeks in Rivendell; Gandalf and Bilbo spent another week-plus there on the way back to Hobbiton. None of them (with the possible exception of Gandalf) knew there was anything special about the boy and might not have even noticed that he was a Mannish child. Bilbo probably never met the adult Aragorn until he returned to Rivendell almost sixty years later. Even then, Strider might have never told his friend the truth about their earlier encounter.

It was now nearly lunchtime, and most of the things had already been sold, for various prices from next to nothing ... ...Bilbo's cousins the Sackville-Bagginses were, in fact, busy measuring his rooms to see if their own furniture would fit. In short Bilbo was "Presumed Dead," and not everybody that said so was sorry to find the presumption was wrong.
...The return of Mr. Bilbo Baggins created quite a disturbance, both under the Hill and over the Hill, and across the Water; it was a great deal more than a nine days' wonder. The legal bother... ...lasted for years. It was quite a long time before Mr. Baggins was in fact admitted to be alive again. The people who had got specially good bargains at the Sale took a deal of convincing; and in the end to save time Bilbo had to buy back quite a lot of his own furniture. Many of his silver spoons mysteriously disappeared and were never accounted for. Personally he suspected the Sackville-Bagginses. On their side they never admitted that the returned Baggins was genuine, and they were not on friendly terms with Bilbo ever after. They really had wanted to live in his nice hobbit-hole so very much."

I've also thought that an elder Aragorn could have sought out Gandalf... bringing himself into Gandalf's path to finally meet the Wizard on neutral territory without revealing who he was or where he came from... or even that he knew much of who he (Gandalf) was at first. It would also make Aragorn very curious and bound to investigate the Shire for himself to see the land of little people.
Tolkien never told the story of how the adult Aragorn first met Gandalf, but his "Tale of Years" does tell us that it was in his twenty-fifth year (TA 2956). They might have met in Bree, during a brief return visit to Rivendell, in the Grey Havens or even near the outskirts of the Shire. The pair might even have first encountered each other somewhere in Wilderland on the east side of the Misty Mountains (Dale? The rebuilt Lake-town? Beorn's place?).
In terms of Jackson's Middle-earth films Aragorn could have first met Gandalf in the year of the Quest of Erebor, but circumstances make it seem more likely to me that they encountered each other either sooner or later than that. I would like to think that Gandalf had met Aragorn before Thranduil had become aware of the young Ranger.

if you say you “never said that”, then I have misinterpreted you (as I do on occasion) when you said:

Which led me to believe that you were questioning the physical appearance of Men v Elves, or considering the possibility that there was no noticeable difference, for if Bilbo or one of the gang HAD encountered (met) a ten-year-old Estel they would know he was of Mankind and not one of Elrond’s people . Of course I KNEW that YOU KNEW better (and that I would be hearing from you  ), but I think, in this case, and in the wording of THIS sentence, a fair misconception (nag  ) on my part. 
I simply threw in the balrog (OT of course) as another supposition just as it’s supposition as to whether Bilbo met a young Aragorn. But I agree that Balrog’s didn’t have wings as such. At least not functional ones.
As to the other question in your same post (while I’m in the area):
Do you suppose that Gandalf was aware of Estel's true name and heritage before he met and befriended Aragorn as an adult? Or would Elrond have kept it a secret even from Mithrandir?
In a nutshell – YES and NO! Mithrandir would know all IMO.
Considering that Cirdan saw further and deeper than any other in Middle-earth, and he welcomed Mithrandir at the Grey Havens, knowing whence he came and whither he would return ; and surely Elrond and Cirdan had many visits over the couple thousands of years that Gandalf was in Middle-earth. I’m sure if Elrond wasn’t aware of the divine nature of Gandalf he would have been told by Cirdan, and Gandalf’s integrity and purpose would be beyond question in the mind of Elrond. There would be no secrets imo.

...In a brief, casual encounter, Bilbo might not have noticed that a young Estel (Aragorn) was not an Elf. With a close enough look, I'm sure he would have noted the differences that would have marked the boy as a Man. I just like the idea that Aragorn's friendship with Bilbo might have begun that early.
Of course in Peter Jackson's film series, Aragorn had probably been gone from Rivendell for as much as five years before Bilbo and the Dwarves visited there.

Sorry, I’m just not into Jackson’s incorrect timeline.
Incorrect implies, to me, that Peter Jackson changed the timeline of events by mistake through accident. His changes were (mostly) quite intentional--made to support the story as he wanted to tell it. I don't agree with many of those changes, but that doesn't make them incorrect from his point-of-view.
I do believe that a few of those changes were accidental. the chief one being the subtraction of a year from Bilbo's birthdate (which also alters the year of the Long-expected Party as well as the year of the Quest of Erebor and the Battle of Five Armies). This is the sort of thing that gives headaches to continuity geeks such as myself.

You, as far as I can tell, are at (or near) the top of the Jackson timeline maestros on this site, and I cannot talk intelligently about any particular timeline changes in the films.
But being the book-purist that I am Jackson’s timelines according to canon (and me) are incorrect, whether his changes were intentional or not. And if you choose to use the word ‘altered’ because his timeline changes were mostly intentional – I’m pretty good with that.

And Minas Ithil they built, Tower of the Rising Moon, eastward upon a shoulder of the Mountain of Shadow; and westward at the feet of the White Mountains Minas Anor they made, Tower of the Setting Sun. The Lithedays are a bit problematical, aren't they?

The Lithedays fall between the months of June and July so the only way to include them is to squeeze them into June 30 and July 1. That must feel a little awkward.
At least Yuletide incorporates the six days on the Shire calendar from December 29 to January 2, so you can cover both of the two actual Yuledays on January 31.

I seem to have completely missed the reference to Midsummer in my last read-through of "The Tale of Aragorn and Arwen". However, I have to ask: are we sure that "the evening of Midsummer" should be read as Midsummer's Day and not Midsummer's Eve? Might Aragorn and Arwen plighted their troth on 1 Lithe? Enquiring minds want to know.
At least this gives us a better idea of how Aragorn spent the year TA 2980:
- Early Spring: Led the attack on the Corsair fleet at Umbar.
- Mid-spring: Returning from the Mountains of Shadow, Aragorn was reunited with Arwen in Lórien.
- Midsummer: Arwen and Aragorn become engaged; Aragorn returns to Rivendell.
- By Summer's end: Aragorn arrives in Rivendell and speaks with Elrond. Soon after, he leaves for distant lands.
