Lucy [In reply to] Can't Post

mostly because of Imogen Stubbs's portrayal of her in the Emma Thompson "Sense & Sensibility." She was shallow & manipulative, but you could still see why a younger Edward might have fallen for her.

Yeah, Lucy Steele [In reply to] Can't Post

Funny how quickly she picked up the brother after he got everythingWink Although Caroline Bingley would take a close second - what a Bee Yotch!

Going for Lucy as well. [In reply to] Can't Post

She's evil, but she goes about it in such an innocent way.

love imogene stubb's portrayal of lucy [In reply to] Can't Post

love imogene stubb's portrayal of lucy. she is so sweet of countenance and tone that the substance of what she does and says goes largely unnoticed by others. i'm fascinated (and frustrated) by people who have that quality, and are able to get away with egregious behavior that they would not be able to otherwise.

and yes.... easy to see why a younger edward would have fallen for her. would have loved to have actually seen her machinations when she was trying to secure the attentions of edward's brother +and+ the approval of their mutual mother.

i'm also exceedingly fond of carey mulligan's isabella thorpe. she gave that role a lot of depth. her isabella is conniving, yes, but you can see that she acutely feels the precariousness of her family's financial situation, and -- given the social straightjacketing of that time -- tries hard to win a wealthy mate and superior connections, as a way out of financial instability.

cheers --

Another Austen minx [In reply to] Can't Post

... now has her own movie. If you haven't seen it: it's rather misleadingly called "Love and Friendship", which was the title of one of Jane Austen's juvenile works, but it's actually "Lady Susan" and a pretty close adaptation too, allowing for the fact that the original is in the form of letters. Lady Susan and her dear friend Alicia Johnson are very minxly indeed...
