Hamfast Gamgee is sensible, wise, supportive of his son and is just a plain, decent fellow.

You just know by how he took care of Frodo that he'd always make sure his kids were okay.

Sam is my favorite out of all characters in the movies. At the end of the ROTK after all this adventure, it ends with him being a lovely and heartwarming dad to his children.

My first inclination was Théoden - though I'm probably screwing up, 'cause he was really an Uncle to Eowyn. He was probably a great dad before Sauruman took over; he certainly grieved for his son after Gandalf brought him back. He might actually be my favorite King as well!

I'm going with Bard since we actually get to see him with his kids in the film. I'm not sure who I'd vote for if this specified book version since we didn't get to see a lot of interaction between fathers and children in the books. While I love the character of Sam and I'm sure he was a superb father , the evidence of that in either film or book is unfortunately pretty slim and I'm afraid I can't agree that the number of progeny is an indicator of the quality of the parent.

Like I said, Sam took such care of Frodo, you knew what kind of dad he'd be. Merry and Faramir I think would turn out to be good fathers; Faramir would try very hard not to repeat his own father's style! Pippin would be a "fun" father. Aragorn and Eomer would be exacting but would teach their kids skills. As for the Dwarves we really only know about Gloin, who raised a bit of a hothead but with his heart in the right place.

As Strider, he's a bit brusque, but as he embraces his Aragorn-ness, he's gentler and more nurturing. I think he exhibits a wonderful balance of strength and sensitivity. He can kick backside, then carefully tend wounds. (And just think how handy his ability to heal would be! ) Plus, I think he would be an excellent father for his daughters; he has great respect for the women in his life.

When I said Aragorn could "kick backside then carefully tend wounds", I in no way meant to imply it would be his child's backside he'd be kicking. I just mean that Aragorn is tough but caring.
