TIME - June 11

Today in Middle-earth June 11, 2941 (S.R. 1341) 1. Gandalf searches out the path into the valley of Rivendell. (determined from text) ..."Gandalf led the way. "We must not miss the road, or we shall be done for... ...We need food, for one thing, and rest in reasonable safety—also it is very necessary to tackle the Misty Mountains by the proper path, or else you will get lost in them, and have to come back and start at the beginning again (if you ever get back at all)." ......"You are come to the very edge of the Wild, as some of you may know. Hidden somewhere ahead of us is the fair valley of Rivendell where Elrond lives in the Last Homely House. I sent a message by my friends, and we are expected." ......They were growing anxious, for they now saw that the house might be hidden almost anywhere between them and the mountains... ...Altogether it was a very slow business following the track even guided by Gandalf, who seemed to know his way about pretty well. ...His head and beard wagged this way and that as he looked for the stones... ...but they seemed no nearer to the end of the search when the day began to fail. Tea-time had long gone by, and it seemed supper-time would soon do the same. There were moths fluttering about, and the light became very dim, for the moon had not risen... ...They came to the edge of a steep fall in the ground so suddenly that Gandalf's horse nearly slipped down the slope. ..."Here it is at last!" he called, and the others gathered round him and looked over the edge... ...Their spirits rose as they went down and down... ...and there was a comfortable feeling in the twilight. The last green had almost faded out of the grass, when they came at length to an open glade not far above the banks of the stream. ..."Hmmm! it smells like elves!" thought Bilbo, and he looked up at the stars. They were burning bright and blue. Just then there came a burst of song like laughter in the trees... ......They were elves of course. Soon Bilbo caught glimpses of them as the darkness deepened. He loved elves, though he seldom met them; but he was a little frightened of them too. Dwarves don't get on well with them. Even decent enough dwarves like Thorin and his friends think them foolish (which is a very foolish thing to think)... ..."...Well, well!" said a voice. "Just look! Bilbo the hobbit on a pony, my dear! Isn't it delicious!" ..."Most astonishing wonderful!" ..."...You are a little out of your way," said the elf: "...We will set you right, but you had best get on foot, until you are over the bridge. Are you going to stay a bit and sing with us, or will you go straight on? Supper is preparing over there... ...I can smell the wood-fires for the cooking." ...Tired as he was, Bilbo would have liked to stay awhile. Elvish singing is not a thing to miss, in June under the stars, not if you care for such things. Also he would have liked to have a few private words with these people that seemed to know his name and all about him.... ...He thought their opinion of his adventure might be interesting. Elves know a lot and are wondrous folk for news, and know what is going on among the peoples of the land, as quick as water flows, or quicker... ......And so at last they all came to the Last Homely House, and found its doors flung wide."

Today in Middle-earth June 12, 2941 (S.R. 1341) 1. The house of Elrond. (determined from text) ..."Now it is a strange thing, but things that are good to have and days that are good to spend are soon told about, and not much to listen to; while things that are uncomfortable, palpitating, and even gruesome, may make a good tale, and take a deal of telling anyway. They stayed long in that good house, fourteen days at least, and they found it hard to leave. Bilbo would gladly have stopped there for ever and ever—even supposing a wish could have taken him right back to his hobbit-hole without trouble.... ......The master of the house was an elf-friend—one of those people whose fathers came into the strange stories before the beginning of History, the wars of the evil goblins and the elves and the first men in the North. In those days of our tale there were still some people who had both elves and heroes of the North for ancestors, and Elrond the master of the house was their chief. ...He was as noble and as fair in face as an elf-lord, as strong as a warrior, as wise as a wizard, as venerable as a king of dwarves, and as kind as summer. He comes into many tales, but his part in the story of Bilbo's great adventure is only a small one, though important.... ...His house was perfect, whether you liked food, or sleep, or work, or story-telling or singing, or just sitting and thinking best, or a pleasant mixture of them all. Evil things did not come into that valley."

Today in Middle-earth June 13, 2941 (S.R. 1341) 1. Gandalf, Bilbo and the Company of Dwarves settle at Rivendell. (not from the appendices-no text) ...What do you imagine was going on in the Last Homely House of Rivendell? Thorin is not the only Dwarf present who may have an opinion of the Elves. Do you think Fili and Kili, the younger of the group, felt the same way as their elders? Did Gandalf keep company with Bilbo, Elrond, or Thorin? What was the reaction of the Elves to their visitors? There will be several days before there's any activity by the Fellowship or the Company... so here's your chance to offer a fanfic of what went on during Bilbo's first real experience with the Elves. Here's one in a drabble: Morning in Rivendell ...Bilbo woke to the feel of soft sun on his face. As if warm hands were drawing him from a deep, peaceful sleep. He didn't open his eyes right away. He was in bliss lying on a soft mattress with a lovely feather pillow. After miserable nights of camping and days of jogging along on ponies, he felt he could rest on this very spot for a week. ...His beautiful reverie was suddenly interrupted by a fragrance blending into his waking dream. ..."BREAKFAST!" He lept from his warm bed, dressed and chased the odour of hot food like a hound.

The youngest Dwarves had always seemed to me to be the most willing to try to get along with Elves, so a while back I'd drabbled on an experience as they explored Rivendell: Fili and Kili delighted in the sunshine and air flowing through these rooms and outbuildings, quite unlike their underground dwellings. They peered into every opening, fascinated by the Elvish craftsmanship they found. From one building they heard a distinct hammering. A smithy! Metalwork - they knew it well, and watched with fascination as the Elf wielded his tongs and hammer with skill. "You do excellent work!" said Fili. He smiled broadly. "Praise from the praiseworthy! For you know, it was Dwarves who first taught this skill to Elves." Fili and Kili blushed with pride as he gave a slight bow.

did replace the "original" bathing scene, that is, the one at the base of the Carrock, I do feel it made us appreciate Dwarves being fully-clothed. Speaking of bathing scenes, there is, of course, the (hypothetical) infamous bathing scene at Parth Galen: He awoke suddenly, startled by unearthly whoops and yells. Cautiously peering from beneath the low-hung branches which gave cover from the searching eyes of his enemies, he wondered: were they being attacked? Silently he immersed himself into the chill water. His hand grasped a floating log, and he steadied it in front of himself, peering between the branch stumps. Paddling around a rock, he came upon the scene, and froze in terror - as the future King of Gondor, naked as a babe, cannonballed off a boulder onto the shrieking, swimming forms below. Gollum cringed, and retreated to his hideout.

Today in Middle-earth June 14, 2941 (S.R. 1341) 1. Gandalf, Bilbo & the Dwarves rest in Rivendell. (from Karen Wynn Fonstad, The Atlas of Middle-earth) ..."All of them, the ponies as well, grew refreshed and strong in a few days there. Their clothes were mended as well as their bruises, their tempers and their hopes. Their bags were filled with food and provisions light to carry but strong to bring them over the mountain passes. Their plans were improved with the best advice." June 14, 3019 (S.R. 1419) 1. The sons of Elrond meet the escort and bring Arwen to Edoras. (from the appendices-no text) ...The Company had been travelling for nearly three weeks when Elrohir and Elladan meet Arwen (their sister), Elrond, Galadriel and Celeborn, Glorfindel and Erestor (Elrond's chief counsellors and Noldor of Rivendell), and other members Arwen's escort.

"Not only was there wonderful sunshine and delicious rain, in due times and perfect measure, but there seemed something more: an air of richness and growth, and a gleam of a beauty beyond that of mortal summers that flicker and pass upon this Middle-earth." Mortal summers that flicker and pass...such an Elvish way of phrasing that passing of time!

... that Frodo was covertly visited late one evening by a few Elvish friends from Rivendell passing West to the Havens and he allowed one or two to peruse his latest writings, wherein he was given the idea of Elvish “flickering summers” and incorporated similar into his writings. (Assuming of course that Frodo was the narrator of this portion of the Red Book.) And were this visitation after May 1 (when Sam and Rosie got married and moved into Bag End), Sam would have been beside himself with joy, as well as Rosie. Although I don’t believe it’s mentioned that any Elves ever made a sneak-visit to Bag End – but why not? Frodo spent over two months in Rivendell (going and coming), and we can assume he made several Elvish friends during these times, and after all it’s not that Hobbiton is out of the way (much). And if such visit(s) should actually take place I’m sure that Frodo would have raided the pantries for his most delectable pies, tarts, and cakes!

Of course Bag End had Elvish visitors!!! It would be no incredible feat for any of the fair folk to make their way into the Shire and Bag End. It's not just their friendship with Frodo, but Bilbo as well. All those long years Bilbo stayed in Rivendell, I'm sure the stories of his home in Hobbiton were many and enchanting. I know if I were any of the Elves who hear those stories, I'd have trouble not going to a place so beloved by the hobbits and so much a part of them. Given the elven preference for walking under the stars, any High Elves who visited Bilbo or Frodo at Bag End probably came in the evening and went unremarked by his neighbors.

When I think of Bilbo or Frodo visiting the elves, I picture something more like the little meeting Frodo, Sam, and Pippin had in the woods with Gildor's folk. I would think that the hobbits would meet them in the lonely woods of the Shire, far from the eyes of prying neighbors.

But how would the hobbits know when to plan a rendezvous with Elvish friends? Unless they received some advance word of their coming.

I don't have a good answer to that. Random speculation can be fun though! We know that messages went back and forth between The Shire and Bree on occasion. (Probably couriered.) Maybe that system could have been employed? Or maybe, as you suggest, the elves would simply send a heads-up to Bilbo telling him when they planned to be swinging through the Shire in a month or so. (Carrier raven or similar.) Last thought-the elves, knowing Bilbo's habit of wandering through the woods on occasion, simply went where they thought he was likely to be whenever they were in the neighborhood.

Of course we’re talking about gramma’s T.A. 3020 “TIME” entry. Bilbo was still in Rivendell at the time. So THESE particular visit(s) would be to Frodo. Any visits to Bilbo’s Bag End would have to be before T.A. 3001. (Hmmm ) Yes, principally; but I'm guessing that Bilbo might have had the occasional Elvish visitor(s) in the years before he left Bag End as well. Or that he might have encountered High Elves from time to time in his rambles through the Shire.

. . . I'm guessing that Bilbo might have had the occasional Elvish visitor(s) in the years before he left Bag End as well. Or that he might have encountered High Elves from time to time in his rambles through the Shire. If I recall correctly wasn’t he called by “Mad Baggins” (by some) for his wandering around and possible visiting of Elves? Can’t put my finger on any particular quote right now.

If I recall correctly wasn’t he called by “Mad Baggins” (by some) for his wandering around and possible visiting of Elves? Can’t put my finger on any particular quote right now. At the end of The Hobbit it is stated outright:
He took to writing poetry and visiting the elves; and though many shook their heads and touched their foreheads and said "Poor old Baggins!" and though few believed any of his tales, he remained very happy to the end of his days, and those were extraordinarily long. Although Peter Jackson implies otherwise, I feel that Bilbo may have even visited the Grey Havens on one or more occasions. And at the beginning of The Fellowship of the Ring the miller, (Ted?) Sandyman, says:
'Ah, but he has likely enough been adding to what he brought at first,' argued the miller, voicing common opinion. 'He's often away from home. And look at the outlandish folk that visit him: dwarves coming at night, and that old wandering conjuror, Gandalf, and all. You can say what you like, Gaffer, but Bag End's a queer place, and its folk are queerer.' Elves, dwarves, a wizard--there goes the neighborhood!

Yet this quote doesn’t state that he was visited IN Bag End by Elves, only that HE “visited the Elves”. Ummm, yes, which is exactly what you wrote in the post I was responding to. Sooo...yeah. So I was stating literary fact, not speculation (since we learn in LotR that Elves occasionally passed through the Shire, even if they did not actually visit Bag End).
