picture courtesy of moviepilot.com If, like many of us, you heard about the making of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings movies before they even started production (and were old enough to read at the time, haha), you probably remember the good old days of endless debates and discussions around casting rumors! Was Sean Connery really considered to portray Gandalf? Was Sylvester McCoy considered for a role long before he brought Radagast to life in The Hobbit movies? This interesting article over at moviepilot.com puts a number of those rumors to rest. Do you think Patrick Stewart would have made a good Gandalf? What about Jake Gyllenhaal as Frodo? If there are any rumors left over from the olden days that aren't covered in this article, let us know in the comments section and we'll see what we can find out. Read the full article here.

Knowing that Vin Diesel is a long-time gamer who sports a tattoo of the name of his favorite Dungeons & Dragons player character, I can well-imagine him auditioning to play Aragorn! I also understand why he wouldn't have gotten the part. Sorry, VIn! It just wasn't in the dice.

I actually think Christopher Lee would have been a good Gandalf. Certainly, he understood the part and role better than anyone else involved in the production. I am, however, quite satisfied with the end product having Lee play Saruman and McKellen as Gandalf. I'm sorry Daniel Day-Lewis declined the role of Aragorn. I greatly appreciate what Viggo Mortensen did during shooting after watching the Appendices but I really didn't like his portrayal. Of course, that could have been PJ's directing and film-editing but it was one of my few complaints from the trilogy.
