TIME/PLACE CORRELATION OF ALL MEMBERS OF THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING Can't Post

[All dates and places are from The Lord of the Rings books. “TY” indicates The Tale of Years. Page references are from the original Ballantine paperback edition (sorry) Vols. I, II, III. An ** indicates some conjecture.]

(Clarification: To not overload my listing for Feb. 22 I have taken some liberties and suppositions on Gandalf’s movements from Caras Galadon to Treebeard’s Hill to the meeting with the Three Hunters. On Feb 23 Aragorn (Just n. of Sarn Gebir) sees an eagle (I’ve assumed Gwaihir) flying slowly south, dusk (I 498). Legolas sees Gwaihir on Feb. 27, ‘. . . the last time was three days ago, above the Emyn Muil.’. Gandalf states ‘…that was Gwaihir the Windlord. . .I sent him before me to watch the River and gather tidings.‘ (II 126). Thus I have Gandalf leaving Caras Galadon on Feb. 22.)

Distance from Caras Galadon to Treebeard’s Hill is about 150 miles (straight line), using CJRT’s big fold-out map, and Fonstad’s Atlas of Middle-earth which seem to be in fair agreement. I have put Gandalf’s leaving Lorien on Feb. 22 which would give him but only four or five days recuperation from being “light as a feather”. This would give him about six or seven days to “see Treebeard”, and about ten or eleven days to reach Treebeard’s Hill, and I have assumed he was in no particular hurry (at least in the beginning of his walk as he was possibly still in a ‘weakened healing mode’, and he had Gwaihir running scout for him). See the entry for Feb. 22 for further information.

(Corrections, discussion, different assumptions, etc. are welcome. And for those of a mind, comparisons between text and movies are fair game. Smile)

Thanks a bunch N.E. Brig & noWiz . . . [In reply to] Can't Post

What? No blatant errors? Hit me if you choose.

I wrote & typed (yes, no computer) this out way back in the early ‘70s for my own amusement and curiosity. Of course I did a little tweaking and formatting for presentation on TORn, and of course I really didn’t expect a plethora of response. Just hoping that a few would find it of value and perhaps cut and paste for their own future use.

Thanks again,
BG

BTW cut & paste back in the day meant "scissors" and "glue" Evil
