Awwww... sure there is interest :D [In reply to] Can't Post

You've done an incredibly detailed job putting these together, and I know it has taken me a lot of time to process all of the alternatives. I LOVE your choices and can see how much you stopped and put each of these cast members into the personality of their counterparts.

Anything that has John Williams.... he's amazing! However, I think Howard Shore would be PERFECT!

Love, love, love that you have Brandon Gleeson in your cast list :D

Filming to be done in NZ? Yes!

*high five* Well Done!!!!

Please don't be too despondent..... [In reply to] Can't Post

You've put so much work into this I feel really bad for not having anything worthwhile to say on it. Fact is though, I can't summon up much enthusiasm for a film or TV version of the Silmarillion when I know that there isn't going to be one, at least in the foreseeable future. I'm also woefully bad at imaginary casting - there are a lot of names on your list I've never even heard of.

Maybe if you try to broaden the subject. You've obviously thought a lot about the characters in the Sil. Perhaps more people might join in with a discussion about favourite characters, not specifically related to who could play them.

The Casting Game [In reply to] Can't Post

I once wrote (in More People's Guide to JRR Tolkien) that the casting game is really just a shorthand way for a fan to talk about how he or she sees the characters. If I see Tom Bombadil as (a younger) Brian Blessed, and you see him as a (still living) Robin Williams, we've had a brief conversation. The array of Hollywood actors, living and dead, becomes a kind of shorthand, like the language in the Star Trek Next Generation episode 'Darmok'.

Indeed, I see little point to the game otherwise.

Chris Hemswoth as Tulkas [In reply to] Can't Post

seems like a fun idea. I always imagined Tulkas as Tolkiens version of Thor.
I'd like the cousins Turin and Tuor played by the same actor, since they never meet face to face. Different hair and dress and of course played differently. Could be done

Seems like a job for [In reply to] Can't Post

An actor in his mid-twenties to late thirties, any hair color, tall, and can play multiple roles.

Daniel Day-Lewis would have been perfect in the 80s-early 90s.

Im afraid it's quicker to tell you which ones I do recognise! [In reply to] Can't Post

From your first post:
Liam Neeson, Christian Bale, Daniel Craig, Hattie Moraham, Emma Watson

From your second:
Jason Isaacs, Domnhall Gleeson, Ewan McGregor, Tom Felton

From your third:
Alicia Vikander, Paul Bettany, Eva Green, Idris Elba, Asa Butterfield

Fourth:
Timothy Spall, Burn Gorman, Brandon Gleeson

Fifth:
William Moseley, Lily James, Freddie Highmore, David Tennant

I've never heard of any of the other actors you've listed - so though I take the point someone else made about this being a way of discussing the characters, I'd say it only works if everyone involved knows who the actors are!

But I'm interested that you've included Paul Bettany - he was always my first choice for Thranduil. I also used his face once as model for drawings of Elladan and Elrohir.

It also intrigues me that you've named Andrew Davies as writer. I think he would be a very interesting choice, partly because his adaptations are so good, partly because he is never afraid not only to cut things to bring outessential elements of the original, partly because he's never afraid of adding things if he feels it's necessary.

Huh? The Istari do not appear in Middle-earth until about the year 1000 of the Third Age or a bit later. And your casting suggestions for them are awfully young. How do they figure into the downfall of Númenor?

Quote
They came therefore in the shape of Men, though they were never young and aged only slowly, and they had many powers of mind and hand.
