Just supposing they Beorn had heard of the treasure, become tempted, gone to take on Smaug in beer form, would he win? In which case, there would have been no need for a long journey, Bilbo growing in character, all those chases. travelling through forests, policies of Lake-town and the Elvenking etc! Not sure what would happen to the Ring, though.

I never heard of Beorn turning into beer. How many gallons? But, no, I don't think that Beorn could have come close to defeating Smaug.

The Dwarves shouldn't have melted all that gold - they should have just drown Smaug in beer; possibly from the "Green Dragon!" Oh come on, they're DWARVES! They probably had tons of barrels in Erebor somewhere.... Balin & Dwalin are after Bilbo's beer; "Hello, I'm Peter and I'll be your waiter"; Are we really surprised that they found the barrels? Even his #Majesty has been known to have a few!

If the only thing that has a chance at getting through Smaug's scales is a shot black arrow, I doubt bear claws are going to do much, except maybe angering him by going for his eyes.

Can't see Beorn as someone who'd be interested in treasure...

More likely to fancy a pet dragon, if it hadn't done him any harm. That is, of course, unless Smaug said he was friendly with goblins...
For still there are so many things that I have never seen: in every wood and every spring there is a different green. . .

...Beorn had many years to sit and brewed over the state of affairs in the region. Smaug was clearly fermenting chaos and a revival of dark forces. I imagine Beorn would have worked himself into frothy rage and descended on the mountain in hops of challenging the dragon. Ultimately, it would be a pour choice as he has barley any chance of winning.

“Tollers,” Lewis said to Tolkien, “there is too little of what we really like in stories. I am afraid we shall have to try and write some ourselves.”
