**Founders Day: Six Subject Line Challenge Can't Post

Whilst our dear weaver is away for a bit, I thought I'd bring her here in spirit with the game she often shares during our parties. It's the "Six Subject Line Challenge"!

The way the game is played is that 6 subject lines are randomly chosen from current Discussion Board pages and you incorporate as many of those lines as you can into some sort of fanfic. Whether it's a short story, a drabble, a poem, a song... Whatever you're inspired to do!

So here are 6 subject lines from the Discussion Boards. Flex your creative muscles and have fun!

1. Elves and Dwarves and Orcs, oh my!

2. TRAITOR!! Or maybe not...

3. Everyone dashing towards Gondor

4. Did the old man have a thrush nearby?

5. I'm not the burglar you're looking for.

6. Kinda hard to use a bow with a full beard, though.

Founders and Bounders [In reply to] Can't Post

Flounders, Grounders, Pounders – OH STOP! Angelic
Thank 'ee gramma (for putting up w/ my silly).

1.
Elves and Dwarves and Orcs, oh my!
All dwell in Middle-earth - but why?
‘Cause that was the tale
That Tolkien made sail
And our hearts have climbed high to the sky.

2.
Traitor!! Or maybe not…
He who turns-coat is a sot.
In Arda defectors
At times were collectors
Of secrets that were dearly bought.

3.
Everyone dashing towards Gondor
Even Orcs and Men and Grond or
Maybe some Trolls
To fill-up the holes
When heard “Forth Eorlingas!” over yonder.

4.
Did the old man have a thrush nearby?
Or ‘twas the raven that appeared by and by?
And when raven spoke
He thought, “Hey a joke!”
“Didn’t know birds could talk, I say hereby!”

5.
I’m not the burglar you’re looking for.
I’m afraid you’ve mistook me for
A thief of some note,
But if I get a vote
I’ll not open the door no more, no more!

6.
Kinda hard to use a bow with a full beard, though.
With lottsa wild hair blowin’ in the eyes don’t you know.
A true straight shooter
Would be a lot cuter
Clean-shaven, and clipped, with coiffured countenance aglow.

Ha! Got 'em all. [In reply to] Can't Post

“Kinda hard to use a bow with a full beard, though,” griped Glóin, pushing aside his beard for the five hundredth time. “This is really Kili’s territory.”
“You could always cut it off,” suggested Gandalf.
Glóin spared one second to send a malevolent glance towards the ancient wizard. “Are you kidding?”
“Just saying.”
Neither Gandalf nor the Dwarf noticed as a diminutive bird flew off towards Dale, where a peaceable hobbit contentedly snacked on peanuts and grapes. Seeing the thrush approaching, Bilbo Baggins groaned and downed two grapes at once.
“Please don’t tell me they need me at the Mountain.”
There was laughter in the thrush’s eyes as it chirped in reply, “Gandalf wants a pair of scissors.”
“No!” exclaimed Bilbo with determination. He slowly waved his hand in the bird’s direction. “I’m not the burglar you’re looking for.”
“You’re not the burglar I’m looking for,” chirped the thrush, staring glassily at the hobbit. Bilbo nodded and popped a peanut into his mouth, the bird flapping away from him. He let out his breath in relief. Close call, that. But unfortunately, his conscience had different ideas. Don’tcha think you should help Gandalf out here?
Bilbo sighed. “Whatever.”
It was no problem to slink into Bard’s abandoned tent and snitch the scissors the guy so carelessly left lying around. Even without Bilbo’s magic ring of invisibility, everyone else was at the battle anyhows.
He got through the unguarded gate of Dale, but halted, petrified, at the sight before him.
“Elves and Dwarves and Orcs, oh my!” he squeaked.
But he had a job to do. No room for terror. He drew his sword as protection but, invisible, was able to slip easily enough through the hordes of brawling foes. Where, oh, where was Gandalf? Bilbo stopped and glanced around him, identifying each creature. Elf. Orc. Orc. Dead Orc. Elf. Dead Elf. Dwarf. Wizard. Dwarf. Elf. Dead Elf. Three more dead Orcs.
Wait.
Backtrack.

“WIZARD!” he yelled in triumph, sprinting towards Gandalf. He pulled off his ring in time for Gandalf to see him materialise, holding the scissors high in victory. “Gandalf! I got ‘em!”
“Good man!” exclaimed Gandalf. “Pass them here!”
Bilbo tossed the scissors through the air, and Gandalf deftly caught them.
“Glóin! Eh, Glóin!” The Dwarf next to him turned. “Close your eyes,” commanded the wizard.
Without thinking, the Dwarf closed his eyes... but immediately heard the sound of scissors cutting through hair. Wait. Did the old man have a thrush nearby?
His eyes flew open and he lashed out with his stumpy arms. “Don’t you dare!” Seeing Bilbo at Gandalf’s side, he turned on the hobbit. “TRAITOR!!”
“Or maybe not...” muttered Bilbo, turning tail and fleeing.
In fact, everyone was dashing – towards Gondor far to the south. A Dwarf in his wrath was not a thing to face down without fear.

Ok, a drabble using all six subject lines [In reply to] Can't Post

In no particular order. . . Shocked

As Gandalf stepped off the White Ship Cirdan warned about all the Elves and Dwarves and Orcs, oh my, yes he did. Then he mentioned that Gandalf may on occasion come across a traitor - or maybe not. Gandalf then encountered an old gent with a bushy beard, and a bow. Did the old man have a thrush nearby? Yes he did. But complained about it’s being kinda hard to use a bow with a full beard, though. Gandalf scratched Bilbo’s door, but Bilbo said, “I’m not the burglar you’re looking for.
Short story shorter finds everyone dashing towards Gondor.

The Story of Dorithi: The Wizard is Odd [In reply to] Can't Post

1. Elves and Dwarves and Orcs, oh my! -
2. TRAITOR!! Or maybe not... -
3. Everyone dashing towards Gondor -
4. Did the old man have a thrush nearby? -
5. I'm not the burglar you're looking for. -
6. Kinda hard to use a bow with a full beard, though.-

Dorithi sat pensively at the side of the cold, still pool as her friends fussed and fiddled with a large collection of tiny jars and pots. A set of combs, and hair ties and ornaments were laid out on a flat rock behind her. She twisted her beard absentmindedly around her index finger and stared down into the water, ignoring the reflection of the ravens slowly circling just overhead. "I'm not sure this party is worth it" she said with an edge of exasperation to her voice.

“But with everyone dashing towards Gondor, can you afford to be left out? It's not just a party, it's a test," replied the dwarf-maiden to her right.

"I don't know what I'll do when I get there though. When they ask about the mission, I know in the back my mind I'll be thinking 'I'm not the burglar you're looking for.'"

"TRAITOR!! Or maybe not..." The ravens scattered at the sudden exclamation, and then slowly descended, and perched about on the surrounding rocks and on the shoulders of some of the girls, tilting their heads and pecking at some of the ornaments as they listened.

Dorithi jerked her head around to glare at the speaker, who she found grinning and chuckling behind her. "I know it's really just a bad hair day—and worse for us and just about anyone else except maybe Woses or Entwives,"
said her friend, with just a hint of frustration tinging the amusement in her voice. "But with all the efforts we're putting in here, I think we deserve a little bit better treatment . . . ."

Dorithi turned back to the pool, and began combing her fingers tentatively through the tendrils just under her chin, as her friends wrapped hair ties around the braided strands. "I like this one," she said, picking up a brightly colored ribbon and waving it around in the breeze. "Kinda hard to use a bow with a full beard, though."

“The cover for the mission is the winner of the ‘Miss Dwarf of the West' contest,'" her friend replied. "No one would suspect a glamour queen and two ladies in waiting of a spy mission through territory with even a scattering of Orcs about. But if you can find the Dragon trove before they do, the Coalition of Gondor can move in and secure the treasure long before the enemy can find it and make use of it."

“So were supposed to just skip around through the wilderness shouting 'Elves and Dwarves and Orcs, oh my!' while Gandalf sits back and sips Ent draughts with Faramir in the Archive Café. How did he come up with the location anyway. Did the old man have a thrush nearby?"

“That was rude even for you," said another friend. “Here we even reserved time down here at Mirrormere and all you can do is fuss and grumble!"

Dorithi apologized and promised her friends floor seats for the judging, but faint grumbling could still be heard floating out into the valley under the mountain.

Some days later, a procession could be seen winding southwards. The ravens gathered around and sat in concentric circles on an enormous boulder at the foot of the mountain with a full view of the road and the entire line of travelers. The largest Raven, and obviously the oldest judging by his ragged feathers and enormous beak, spoke softly to the young nestlings gathered around him: “Hear now the saga of Dorithi, and the Wizard is Odd . . ."

LOC NEWS AND OPINION: Was L. Frank Baum a Dwarf of Middle-earth? [In reply to] Can't Post

The unearthing of an obscure Middle-earthian myth has raised speculation that the author of a fantasy classic was actually a Dwarf of Middle-earth.

Tolkien scholar Ethel Duath recently published an English translation of a Dwarvish scroll found by archaeologists in a deep cavern on the south-eastern coast of Great Britain, the area in which historians believe the Dwarf-kingdom of Moria to have existed as much as 500,000 years ago. The scroll related the legend of "Dorithi, and the Wizard is Odd". This will sound strikingly familiar to fantasy readers, calling to mind Dorothy, the main character of L. Frank Baum's novel The Wizard of Oz.

Experts are digging deeper into this puzzle, whilst Oz fans everywhere are greatly excited that the writer may have been a descendant of a Dwarvish civilisation.

Moria? Unlikely! [In reply to] Can't Post

If I remember correctly, Mordor was supposed to be located roughly where modern Turkey is today, with Mount Doom in Romania. That would put the ruins of Khazad-dûm in northern Germany rather than south-east Great Britain. it seems more likely that the archaeological team discovered an Arnorian archive from the period of the Reunited Kingdom, constructed in the region of Minhiriath. That isn't to say that the scroll could not be of Dwarvish origin.

I don't mean this little aside to disrupt the game!

Tales and dreams are the shadow-truths that will endure
when mere facts are dust and ashes, and forgot."
