Greetings and salutations everyone! Bilbo and his faithful scribe are back this week after a bit of a break with another fun-filled brainteaser – our first on the new boards! Tonight, Bilbo is busy reminiscing about his dear cousin Frodo (how many times removed, Patty? ) and his eventful life. So, the theme of tonight’s quiz is: all about Frodo. The format tonight is “Phrase Re-arrange.’ Each group of letters below is part of a larger phrase that is out of order. Re-arrange the groups of letters to form the complete phrase. Each correct answer is worth 3 points each for a total of 30 points. Closed book! Example AR…EVE…NST (1 word) Answer: Evenstar Questions 1. IN…G…ST (one word) 2. EL…FFR…ND…IE (two words) 3. 1. IN…G…ST (one word) Ingst' - Shire slang for 'gangster', which was what Mr F's peeps called him at when they gathered at midnight at the Four Farthing Stone in their tweens. (Sting) 2. EL…FFR…ND…IE (two words) Fried elf - one of the meals Aragorn swore the Hobbits to secrecy on when they were really, really hungry between Weathertop and Rivendell. Which also explains the absence Elladan and Elrohir from the movie. (Elf friend) 3. EA…R…RI…B…NG…RE (two words) Rear bireng - a little-known item of armour that saved Frodo from cheap shot to the heinie during the battle of the Chamber of Mazarbul. (Ring bearer) 4. F…NE…RS…IN…GE…NI (two words) Finne Genirs - the name of Frodo's favourite Shire song, only half-remembered remnants of which remain today from the original line: "Finne genir finne genah, finne genir finne ginaaaaah, echoes sound afar finne genir finne genah". (Nine fingers) 5. STE…MUS…OM…HRO…R…ALE (two words) Hroom musterale - Treebeard's message to Frodo, which the Hobbit was never able to decipher. (Mushroom stealer) 6. ER…U…MR…ND…LL…HI (two words) Llhiu Mrernd - Frodo's name in a little-known dialect of Welsh. (Mr Underhill) 7. SO…D…N…RO…OF…GO (three words) God, son, roof - The three things that Frodo learned were most important to those poor Orcs who lived within ash-fall distance of Orodruin. (Son of Gondor) 8. LO…CR…KH…W…IC…OL (one word) Wickhollocr - Frodo's attempt to say "Wicked colour!" about someone's fuschia jacket after five too many beers at the Green Dragon. (Crickhollow) 9. HER…NW…TOP…WOU…DO…NDE…EAT (three words) Eather top donwnde - More incomprehensibility after a big night out from Frodo. The Green Dragon's ale had a lot to answer for, really. (Wounded on Weathertop) 10. ADR…PHI…GAL…AL…OF…IEL (three words) Phil of Galadrieal - A wheelwright of the suburb of Galadrieal, Bree, who kept getting some long-lived chick's letters from her rellies in an awful-sounding place called Valinor. (Phial of Galadriel)
Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." "Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded b*****d with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak. And now turns on brain. What's that terrible sound? Uh-oh, off to the brain mechanic we go. 1. IN…G…ST (one word) STING The shortened version of one of Gollum's cousins nicknames, Stinger/Slinger. He made a great Mojito, but it left you with a nasty headache. This is the real reason that Gollum wanted to get out of the sunlight. 500 years later, still had a hangover. 2. EL…FFR…ND…IE (two words) ELF FRIEND Or, as the elves used to say among themselves, bye bye love, bye bye sweet caress, hello wilderness, I think you're going to die-ie-ie. Bye bye Elf Friend goodbye. 3. EA…R…RI…B…NG…RE (two words) RING BEARER Not quite as bad as being called Elf Friend, but a combination of the two is almost always fatal, and often much, much worse than fatal. 4. F…NE…RS…IN…GE…NI (two words) NINE FINGERS A hobbit drinking song, much like ten green bottles, but involving pints, mowing scythes and questions asked of mysterious strangers in the pub. The real reason the Entwives didn't stick around in the Shire, despite its Arcadian beauty. 5. STE…MUS…OM…HRO…R…ALE (two words) MUSHROOM STEALER Mushrooms are also beloved of Elves. It's a little known fact that mortals who steal mushrooms are named 'Elf Friend' as their punishment. No more certain way to be doomed, doomed, doomed for all time. 6. ER…U…MR…ND…LL…HI (two words) MR UNDERHILL Ironically, Frodo nearly ended up as MR UNDERMOUNTAIN 7. SO…D…N…RO…OF…GO (three words) SON OF DROGO It's true. Gandalf really was the son of Drogo. 8. LO…CR…KH…W…IC…OL (one word) CRICKHOLLOW Probably good that Frodo left. There are no physiotherapists in the Shire. 9. HER…NW…TOP…WOU…DO…NDE…EAT (three words) WOUNDED ON WEATHERTOP Everywhere you go, always take the Morgul Blade with you, everywhere you go, always take the blade. 10. ADR…PHI…GAL…AL…OF…IEL (three words) PHIAL OF GALADRIEL Thank you Altaira and Bilbo.

Talk about the eye working quicker than the the mind. Gondor just stuck in my mind, and that was the first that I wrote down. Ha ha, let's forget the theme of the quiz for a minute!

a little tricksy, needed to go to the Red Book Recipes to find the answers. 1. IN…G…ST (one word) Gin St. Frodo's secret hangout, only seen on Hobbiton maps in moonlight. 2. EL…FFR…ND…IE (two words) Fried fenl - Frodo's favorite accompaniment to roasted coney. 3. EA…R…RI…B…NG…RE (two words) Ranger brie - a particular odiferous cheese from Bree, fondly named after a former frequent visitor 4. F…NE…RS…IN…GE…NI (two words) Ren's Fine Gin - sold only by the glassful on Gin St. 5. STE…MUS…OM…HRO…R…ALE (two words) Erl Mushroom Teas - a favorite of a certain Grey visitor to Bag End 6. ER…U…MR…ND…LL…HI (two words) Her Dill 'N Rum - one of the more unsavory, yet popular establishments on Gin St. 7. SO…D…N…RO…OF…GO (three words) Drogo Foo's - the best chinese take out in Hobbiton 8. LO…CR…KH…W…IC…OL (one word) Low Hill Cork - Frodo's favorite boutique winery in Crickhollow 9. HER…NW…TOP…WOU…DO…NDE…EAT (three words) Tower And Down Toupee - what Frodo and friends liked to secretly call the house of Tom Bombadill, an insider joke on the egghead Tom tried to cover with that silly yellow hat. 10. 1. IN…G…ST (one word) Ingst. Found in early drafts of the LotR manuscript; archaic form of the word "angst", back-developed (de-evolved) to avoid too jarring a note of modernity when referring to Aragorn. 2. EL…FFR…ND…IE (two words) Elf R.N., Die. Quote from a note sent by the notorious serial killer Sickkillerimë the Nurse-hater, in the LotR spin-off CSI: Lothlorien (episode 4, season 2). 3. EA…R…RI…B…NG…RE (two words) Ear Rib Ingres. From a "Hollywood Insider" interview with Gollum, his answer to the questions "What are three things you love *besides* the Ring?" The first two were said with a speculative look at the interviewer which may have had some connection with this interviewer's decision immediately afterward to leave the country and change her name. The third response was a surprise to many, as it had hitherto been thought that Gollum's favorite artist was Goya. 4. F…NE…RS…IN…GE…NI (two words) *runs out of steam and time* 1 = Sting 2 = Elf-friend 3 = Ring-bearer 4 = Nine fingers 5. STE…MUS…OM…HRO…R…ALE (two words) Mushroom stealer! 6. ER…U…MR…ND…LL…HI (two words) Mr. Underhill 7. SO…D…N…RO…OF…GO (three words) Son of Drogo 8. LO…CR…KH…W…IC…OL (one word) Crickhollow 9.
