Important Quote Question
Can't Post
Hello, I figured I could find some LOTR fans here who might be able to help me out. I had this quote in mind that went something along the lines of "The real main character of LOTR is actually Middle Earth." But I can't for the life of me remember who said it or where. Might have come from one of the bonus feature interviews on one of the DVDs, or it might have been in some essay or documentary about LOTR. If anyone could get me a source and the exact wording it would be awesome, as I need it for a quote in my university paper. Thanks in advance!

Probably more than scholar has made this argument, but I'm pretty sure one of them is Brian Rosebury in J.R.R. Tolkien: A Critical Assessment (1992) and/or J.R.R. Tolkien: A Cultural Phenomenon (2003). Excellent books, well worth reading (the latter is a revision of the former, so you probably don't need to read both). You might also look up Christopher Garbowski's fine "Middle-earth" article in J.R.R. Tolkien Encyclopedia: Scholarship and Critical Assessment (2006). Good luck! (And since this is for a paper, you should make sure to get the spelling right: it's "Middle-earth" not "Middle Earth".)
