Bilbo, Gandalf and Frodo are REAL People!

At least, as far as the Library of Congress is concerned. Nearly every book you read has a record created that holds all the information to catalogue that book. The author, subject, publisher, call number... everything needed to identify each book is there. The Library of Congress (LC) is the repository and often creator of those records for international use by libraries, bookstores, publishers, etc. They also classify what is a subject and establish how a personal name (author/individual) is structured for consistent use. That name is always used the same way so you can find everything written by or about that person. It's a big deal in the world of LC. For decades, J.R.R. Tolkien's characters, Bilbo, Frodo and Gandalf, were classified by LC as subjects... topical headings... Bilbo Baggins (Fictitious character). HOWEVER, in the fall of 2015, they each have been reclassified as NAMES instead of subjects!! Now, when the world looks up Middle-earth's hobbits and wizard, they are identified as living beings with legitimate personal names! Bilbo Baggins (Fictitious character) was classified as a subject; is now identified by the NAME - Baggins, Bilbo. Frodo Baggins (Fictitious character) was classified as a subject; is now identified by the NAME - Baggins, Frodo. Gandalf the Grey (Fictitious character) was classified as a subject; is now identified by the NAME - Gandalf. If only LC would realize Middle-earth is not spelled "Middle Earth (Imaginary place)". I'm working on it ;)

Some of us have known it all along!

What? They're now in the 600 field?

Instead of the MARC record 650 field? (Gramma and others who do cataloguing understand the importance of this!) Oh gosh...I should re-catalog our volumes, and try using a TA date for date-of-birth for Bilbo and Frodo! But it is appalling that they still can't spell Middle-earth correctly...

so how does that make them real? its just saying that its a name of a character. even if it did Imply they were real people, that would be wrong becuase they are not. bit of a non story TBH.

Maybe we can request that certain works be re-catalogued as "translated from the Red Book of Westmarch"? The Publication field would be very interesting!
