Book V is all taken (thanks everyone!). There are gaps for Book VI, which we'll do in the autumn. That's four months away right now, of course, but I'm happy to get folks signed up, especially for the earlier chapters. It saves a last minute arm-twisting effort by me, and I always appreciate not having to arm-twist. There has been enthusiasm for doing the appendices, so I have scheduled those too. Rather than doing them appendix by appendix, I propose to tackle them thematically, with leaders taking part of Appendix A (or the Prologue in one case) and everyone citing any bits of the more reference-material-like appendices ad lib when relevant. The Appendices have a lot of scattered info about Hobbits, so I propose to unite this and the Prologue in a hobbit-based discussion. This gives the following schedule: BOOK VI 04-Sep-16 I The Tower of Cirith Ungol squire 11-Sep-16 II The Land of Shadow 18-Sep-16 III Mount Doom noWizardme 25-Sep-16 IV The Field of Cormallen Oliphaunt 02-Oct-16 V The Steward and the King 09-Oct-16 VI Many Partings Mironiel 16-Oct-16 VII Homeward Bound 23-Oct-16 VIII The Scouring of the Shire enanito 30-Oct-16 IX The Grey Havens Appendices 06-Nov-16 1 Concerning Hobbits (from the Prologue, plus hobbit-related items from the Appendices) 13-Nov-16 2 Numenor (from Appendix A.I. i - iii) 20-Nov-16 3 Gondor and the Heirs of Anarion (from Appendix A.I. iv) 27-Nov-16 4 The Tale of Aragorn and Arwen ((from Appendix A.I. v) 04-Dec-16 5 House of Eorl (from Appendix A.II) 11-Dec-16 6 Durin's Folk (from Appendix A.III) 18-Dec-16 7 LAST WEEK: "It's Over. It's Done" - a week of AOB, and a chance for folks to post thoughts & reflections on this, the Sixth Reading Room LOTR Read-through. noWizardme If you'd like to volunteer, please do so by replying to this post, and giving the chapter (or Appendix) name IN CAPITALS (e.g. "THE GREY HAVENS" ) as the title of your reply. This makes it easier for everyone else to see what has just gone. Thanks Epilogue There have been mixed views about the idea of doing the Epilogue (which Tolkien wrote and then cut, only for it to appear in 'Sauron Defeated' a part of HoME). Apart from mixed views about the quality of this part and whether it's appropriate to discuss entirely discarded material, there's the problem that the discussion would exclude people who don't have a copy of Sauron Defeated. So my compromise proposal is that anyone wants to lead an Epilogue discussion should say so, and we can run it as an 'unofficial' discussion, like the long-running one of the also non-canonical Bored Of The Rings. The unofficial discussion of the Epilogue can run simultaneously with one of the Appendices, I think - of late the Reading Room has been quiet apart from the very large amount of views and posts that the read-through is getting. But at other times we have hosted many simultaneous discussions without a problem. If nobody wants to lead an Epilogue discussion there is of course no reason why the Epilogue shouldn't be referred to when discussing Grey Havens (one obvious debate to have is whether Tolkien was right to cut the Epilogue, or whether it provides a more satisfying ending). First-time chapter leaders are most definitely welcomed. ...but beware, it's hard to stop at one If you are potentially interested in leading, but not sure what leading a chapter involves, see here: http://newboards.theonering.net/...i?post=884122#884122 (or read some of the Book IV discussions from the links in my footer - those show a good range of styles, all of which have stimulated good conversations.)
~~~~~~ volunteers are still needed to lead chapters for our upcoming Book VI ROTK read-through (Book V is all signed up, thanks!) http://newboards.theonering.net/...i?post=893293#893293 A set of links to our Book III discussions can be found here: http://newboards.theonering.net/...i?post=886383#886383 A set of links to the Book IV discussions are here: http://newboards.theonering.net/...i?post=899201#899201 A wonderful list of links to Boook II, Book I and previous read-throughs is curated by our very own 'squire' here http://users.bestweb.net/...-SixthDiscussion.htm
...to see that we're planning to do Appendix A. I will step forward at some point when I know a little more about my schedule in the fall. I confess I'm a little sorry you're skipping Summer; a lot of Northern Hemisphere folks have more time in the summer than they do in the winter, and some summer read-throughs have gone quite well.
