Schedule and sign-ups for Return of The King read-through (LOTR Books V and VI)
|
Can't Post
|
|
While it's true we're still on Book IV, I don't see any harm in planning ahead. I'm happy to organize a schedule again, so here is my proposed schedule for Books V and VI. Please let me know of any objections to this schedule - and, most importantly, sign up to lead chapters! Chapters go to the first volunteer. First-time chapter leaders are as welcome as old hands. If you are potentially interested in leading, but not sure what leading a chapter involves, see here: http://newboards.theonering.net/...i?post=884122#884122 (or read some of the Book IV discussions from the links in my footer - those show a good range of styles, all of which have stimulated good conversations.) Schedule: BOOK V 03-Apr-16 I Minas Tirith 10-Apr-16 II The Passing of the Grey Company 17-Apr-16 III The Muster of Rohan 24-Apr-16 IV The Siege of Gondor 01-May-16 V The Ride of the Rohirrim 08-May-16 VI The Battle of the Pelennor Fields 15-May-16 VII The Pyre of Denethor 22-May-16 VIII The Houses of Healing 29-May-16 IX The Last Debate 05-Jun-16 X The Black Gate Opens BOOK VI 04-Sep-16 I The Tower of Cirith Ungol 11-Sep-16 II The Land of Shadow 18-Sep-16 III Mount Doom - noWizardme 25-Sep-16 IV The Field of Cormallen 02-Oct-16 V The Steward and the King 09-Oct-16 VI Many Partings 16-Oct-16 VII Homeward Bound 23-Oct-16 VIII The Scouring of the Shire 30-Oct-16 IX The Grey Havens 06-Nov-16 A Epilogue? Appendices? Foreword? AOB? - What do you want to cover? We have several weeks up until Xmas to do these, if there is enough enthusiasm.see sub-for discussing ideas http://newboards.theonering.net/...i?post=893294#893294 My reasoning for this schedule I'm very happy to re-plan if there's a feeling that another schedule would be better. I'm proposing a particular schedule because last time I asked people to choose between two possibilities, and most people either didn't mind, or didn't comment (which is much the same thing, in my opinion). So that didn't help much, and just delayed the sign-up process. And so I'll assume this is the schedule we shall use, unless I get lots of replies proposing improvements or pointing out that my schedule won't work for some reason. My thinking is that it's nice to give people a little while between books to catch up if the read-through generates writing faster than they have time for reading it. I also wanted to take into account people being away for summer holidays (and other activities). Even if we carried on at the fastest possible speed we would end up running discussions through most of August. I think that would pose a problem for many would-be participants. My guess is that it will be possible for more people to participate if we take a summer break. Cheekily, I'd like to pre-bag Mount Doom. But if someone really really wanted to do that chapter, I'm happy to make way for them.

What ancillary material would you like to include in the read-through (e.g. appendices, epilogue...)

We don't have to stop at The Grey Havens. Tolkien did write an Epilogue, which he then decided not to include in the book. But it was later published as part of History of Middle Earth, so it is available for discussion if we want. Some of the appendices could be tackled as chapters to discuss. For reference here is a list of them: Appendix A: Annals of the Kings and Rulers I The Númenórean Kings II The House of Eorl III Durin's Folk Appendix B: The Tale of Years (Chronology of the Westlands) Appendix C: Family Trees (Hobbits) Appendix D: Calendars Shire Calendar for use in all years The Calendars Appendix E: Writing and Spelling I Pronunciation of Words and Names II Writing Appendix F I The Languages and Peoples of the Third Age II On Translation Please reply with ideas, also volunteering to lead a discussion of an appendix or other thing if you would be willing to.

01-May-16 V The Ride of the Rohirrim Oliphaunt will gallop off with the Rohirrim. 25-Sep-16 IV The Field of Cormallen I also love the Field of Cormallen, so would do a spring and a fall chapter if that's OK.. I'd enjoy continuing through the appendices, and the epilogue. For me, I would like to see A and B and the epilogue. And if some smart people can tackle the language sections, I bet those of us less gifted would learn a lot from them.

I've just thought .... When volunteering, please could people use the name of your chapter(s) as the subject of your post - e.g. if you wanted to volunteer to lead Minas Tirith, you'd reply with MINAS TIRITH as the subject. Wish I'd thought of that earlier! But I've only just worked out that we probably need to do this - it should make it much easier to scan this thread to see which chapters are already taken (and to see which posts are volunteers as opposed to people contributing other ideas and comments.

Thanks for organizing and thinking ahead, NoWiz. For some reason, I've led a lot more chapters from the first four books than from the last two, so this summer season will be a special treat for me. Book VI is very odd (as the film found out) in that it seems to 'end' around chapter 3 yet goes on for six or seven more chapters. What's to talk about? What indeed. And I would advocate doing the Appendices, unless there just isn't enough interest. Discussions of them are fascinating to some, and boring for others. I believe N.E. Brigand once led a discussion of the Index to round out one of the earlier discussions, but I don't remember it very well. There is also a tradition (if it can be called that) of having a kind of Open Discussion on the whole Lord of the Rings book at the end. No leader, just a week of contributions by anyone who has something to say after reading through the entire thing with the Reading Room gang.

I'd love to have us cover the Appendices. Even the Epilogue sounds intriguing, though since I don't have HoME maybe my local library would have a copy of the Epilogue? I've only poked occasionally around the Appendices, and I'd love to learn some more about how it came together, why what's there is there, how it fits or complicates LOTR and the later Simarillion, etc.

The Epilogue appears in "Sauron Defeated" by Christopher Tolkien

Which is Book IX of History of Middle Earth It is also sometimes listed as "The History of The Lord of the Rings, Part Four" The History of Middle Earth is Christopher Tolkien's massive scholarly effort to order all of JRR's various drafts and outlines. So it is a history of the writing of Middle-earth rather than a history as if written by an inhabitant of Middle-earth. Sauron Defeated starts by presenting the various drafts for The Tower of Cirith Ungol onwards to The Grey Havens. Then it covers the Epilogue, before going onto some post-LOTR works. JRR's friends (who acted as test readers for him) dissuaded him from including the Epilogue - we can discuss whether that was the correct decision. So it is potentially a useful book for all of the Book VI read-through discussions. Discussing it in November does that folks have some time to source a copy from the local library or bookshop of choice. These are the ISBNs of editions that I could find, to help with searching the library or bookshop catalogue ISBN 9780261102408 ISBN 9780261102859 ISBN 9780395606490 ISBN 9780007365333
