Right on with Gandalf & Dain [In reply to] Can't Post

And that's fantastic from memory!

But I see two possible misses we'll delve into later. I say "possible" as I don't have an ebook that apparently does individual word searches -
Cheat, foul, unfair Mad

But have done my dangdest using Foster's guide and some "light" scrolling. Laugh

I suspect that the misses might be 'Anduin' and 'Bagshot Row', but I don't remember those names being in the book.

Oops! [In reply to] Can't Post

I think I have spotted a mistake I made. I do not believe that Elrond is referred to as 'Half-elven' until The Fellowship of the Ring after Frodo regains his senses in Rivendell. If I did make a second mistake, I cannot spot it. You will just have to point it out.

Otaku hot on my heels [In reply to] Can't Post

Right, no ‘Half-elven’ until FotR.

I believe you’ve got them all but one.
My list has only three that ARE mentioned in The Hobbit.
Thorin Oakenshield, Dorwinion, & Esgaroth.

And the one (I believe) you have missed is “Orc”.

After thinking searching, thinking searching there are
lots and lots of Goblins, but of Orcs, none at all Smile (that I can find).

If there is an ‘Orc’ in there it must be in some obtuse place and I hope someone will point it out. . . . Unimpressed

Well [In reply to] Can't Post

Thorin Oakenshield Yes, mentioned in The Hobbit ( probably the easiest one)
Dáin Ironfoot No, not mentioned, Dain only ( all right only Dain is mentioned)
Gandalf ( but I don't think "the Grey" was in the hobbit) Correct, no "Gandalf the Grey" ( I did at least notice this one)
Esgaroth ( I think ) Yes, mentioned in The Hobbit
The Shire ( I think) No, not mentioned
Orc ( I think it is mentioned once or twice in the book) No, not mentioned ( I will coract you and say it is mentioned by Gandalf at the edge of Mirkwood)

Twice [In reply to] Can't Post

But in neither case with a capital O.

Once at the end of Riddles in the Dark, when the mountain orcs are mentioned as the largest goblins, who can go in the tunnels at a great speed; and another time at the end of Queer Lodgings, when Gandalf says the Grey Mountains are infested with goblins, hobgoblins and orcs.

I did miss one in your quiz - I remembered Elrond's ancestry being discussed, but indeed the term half-elven is never used.

you are only incorrect in the location. (Or are we missing another Orc?)

Looks like it was after leaving Beorn's house as Gandalf was leaving the company on some important business.

Ok BG’s, goblin here [In reply to] Can't Post

But I never was 100% sure of “Orc” Blush, and what better place to find out than right by-gol-dang-dernyo here!

So it seems we end up with a grand total of four words from the list that WERE mentioned in The Hobbit:
Dorwinion
Thorin Oakenshield
Esgaroth
Orc
And twelve that were not.

Thanks for hanging in there Otaku . . . You’re alright! I don’t care what they say . . . Smile Smile

Your right of course. You only missed “Half-elven” on your first go.
Guess I lost track after our conversations.

So, you and sador seem to be the winners. And YOU would be First-winner it seems. Smile x 5

Me? [In reply to] Can't Post

If I score handsomely on such quizzes, it is only because N. E. Brigand, the Master of the Reading Room in the old times, doesn't participate.
As the song goes:

Our N. E. Brigand is a pleasant fellow,
Spot-on his questions are, and his tone is mellow.
None has ever caught him yet, for NEB, he is the master:
His book-lore immaculate, and his finds links faster.

I see he stills pops in here and there, but usually in Main and Off Topic nowadays. More is the pity.

But it's a long time since we've had such quizzes as you regularly post. Thank you very much for all of them!

Um.... *nibbles paw [In reply to] Can't Post

I THINK the answer's 'not many'

Just off the top of me 'ed I'd say:

The Shire
Thorin Oakenshield
Dorwinion
Esgaroth

Gandalf is mentioned, of course, but I don't think he's Grey; Dain is in the book, but without personal comments about his foot, the orcses is goblins and I don't remember the eagles having names.

And I may be completely wrong! Sly

Well small nibbler [In reply to] Can't Post

We finally came up with only four that were in The Hobbit:

Dorwinion
Thorin Oakenshield
Esgaroth
Orc (This one I missed too)

All the rest were not.

Right on no Gandalf the Grey, Dain Ironfoot, & Gwaihir – not in there…

I was a little surprised about The Shire too - not in there.

Cheers all over ya! Smile
