The Forbidden Ool, anyone?

Yes that's right - it's an ool. There is no P, and we hope to keep it that way. It's the last chapter remaining in the Book IV read-through that does not have a chapter leader to organize a discussion. It would be great to have a volunteer to lead it. he or she or they would be posting conversation starters in the week beginning 7 February. It's quite a short chapter, and has moon-watching (or sneaky interrogation techniques), fish-poaching, hidden stone knives and moral dilemmas.
~~~~~~ The Reading Room read-through of The Two Towers Book IV has started! Just one chapter left needing a leader: 07-Feb-16 # VI # The Forbidden Pool # Could you do it? Seems about as popular as someone advocating gun control in a Republican primary. So, I tell you what, I will take the chapter if no-one else does!
There may be no “P” in the Forbidden “ool”, but in my younger daze I saw a Snickers bar floating in the local ool. And did that ool clear out fast – Oh Yes . . .
How about "Frodo and Sam Visit the Kardashians" or the chapter on "Faramir and the Wicked Horcrux"? Sheesh, Wiz is just letting this discussion spiral out of control. But when we get to "Gandalf vs. Darth Vader vs. Yoda," I want to cover that one.
I should have explained that Ool...
I should have explained that Ool is - or was - a game played by young mischievous hobbits from the aristocracy. The game was quite simple - like many of the young aristocrats themselves. Each would carry around an 'ool', which was a flat stone,polished and carved, and about the size of the palm of a hobbit hand. A player would 'offer' his ool by tossing it into some spot from which it would be difficult to retrieve - into a stream, say, or into a tall tree. He would then dare his friends to go ahead and retrieve it completely unaided, the one who succeeded winning the ool. Obscure though this game was, it was obviously known to Gandalf, since he made the perfect formal response to Pippin on hearing a stone drop in Moria (you 'll recall that he says "Ool offer, Took?") Later scribes in Gondor evidently didn't know of this sport, and so 'corrected' the text of the Red Book Of Westmarch to the "fool of a Took" wording we see today. But they did thereby create a mystery - why were Gandalf and the Balrog gone so long? It's much easier to understand once you know they were only fighting part of the time, and searching for Pippin's ool during breaks. It 's clear that Gandalf was able to retrieve it by the way - note that after Pippin has suffered by looking into the Palantir, Gandalf comforts him by returning his prized ool straight to Pippin's hand. This was legal under the rules of ool, but a kindness: the usual rules would require Gandalf now to toss the ool somewhere amusingly inconvenient - into a sleeping Gimli's beard, perhaps - and expect Pippin to recover it. But Gandalf presumably thought Pippin had suffered enough for one night. The clear evidence for the ool's return again became garbled in later transcriptions, but was once entirely clear - the line once read "an ool, but an Honest Ool, you retain, Peregrin Took." Now doubtless you are wondering what a 'forbidden ool' was. The game of ool was - like many dare games played by young men -deliberately designed to result in mayhem, embarrassment and risk of injury. But the early days of the game, in which any ool was considered an Honest Ool, came to a tragic end with the misadventures of young Upion Brandybuck. The unfortunate Upion was attempting to retrieve an ool from what appeared to be merely a tree. Sadly, it had lodged in a particularly personal fork of the branches of the young entwife Fangast. Startled from her reverie about the possible benefits of crop rotations, she lashed out ....and the consequences became proverbial. You'll recall the saying Merry quoted to his friends at Isengard: "a punch from an ent-fist crumples Upion like thin tin". In a rare bit of activity after this tragedy Drogulus Took (voted President of the All-Shire Ool Federation solely because he had passed out first at the last spectacular annual dinner) introduced the concept of a "Forbidden Ool". A Forbidden Ool is one that is lodged somewhere from which it would be ungentlemanly to expect your friend to retrieve it - the Crack of Doom, or Rosie Cotton's bodice for example. Or perhaps I should say that those were meant as two different examples. While some hard-core ool players complained that this was destroying the sport, it is probably the case that, even for foolish young hobbits with too little to do, enough is enough....
You've changed forever "The Ool on the Hill" for me. If only Bilbo did serious things like listening to the Beatles instead of wasting his time at quoits, he could have beat Gollum fair and square. The "thirty horses" chestnut was way too easy.
Being working-class, Hamfast never had a chance to learn aristocratic games, as was shown two weeks ago when Frodo dared Sam "you can pass to me ninnyhammer, or any other name the Gaffer gave you" - he clearly did not fear being called an ool. So don't begrudge Hamfast this chapter; after all, leading a RR discussion is a learning process.
Presumably one of them offered an ool, nobody could find it, and the song cryptically commemorates how the fatal arguments began...
I had completely forgotten the ancient and mostly forgotten game of "Ool", and naturally, as is my wont, reverted to my ongoing dread of suspecting “P” in the ool, or God forbid! a floating chocolate bar.
You've just caught some young rascal grubbing about suspiciously in your tater patch. You grab him by the ear to drag him off to see his parents or the Bounders, and he shouts "Fly Your Ools!". It's the call for all players to come to the aid of a captured party. Suddenly the poor gaffer is being pelted with small round stones... 'Tis hard, making an honest living....
