Christopher Lee as Gandalf Can't Post

Lee originally wanted to play Gandalf, and in fact Tolkien wanted the same. Can you see Lee as Gandalf? It would take wiping my memory for me to even start imagining him as someone other than Saruman.

It would be really strange to see him as a good character.

Yes! [In reply to] Can't Post

The two of them met once and Tolkien ended up telling Lee that if there was ever a live-action LOTR movie, he should play Gandalf.

No, that's an urban legend. [In reply to] Can't Post

I once looked up how this story got started, and I believe I sorted it out correctly: enthusiastic but careless fans mixed up two separate "when I was a young lad" stories that Christopher Lee told on the LotR commentary DVDs.

The only thing I saw him in where he wasn't a bad guy was The Devil Rides Out. Great movie btw If you're a fan of Lee.
