A Quick Theme Guide - for people who didn't notice Shore's music in DOS/BOTFA Can't Post

I often hear people say that they didn't notice the music in the second two Hobbit films - that it's 'unmemorable'. This thread is for people who haven't listened to the soundtracks and don't realise how magnificent Shore's score's are for this trilogy, or who just want to listen to some of the best bits.

I've made a list here of the main/best themes from these films. Click on the YouTube links and they'll take you to directly when the theme plays - I've picked my favourite statements of the themes. Hopefully you'll pick up on some when you next see the films, and maybe start enjoying these scores on their own! I've given a few links for each theme so they should become easy to recognise.

House of Durin - A powerful theme for the royal dwarven line

Laketown - Another distinctive location theme for this culture of men

Smaug - A piercing theme for this evil dragon

Tauriel/Kili - A choral love theme for the pair

And three fantastic themes that you don't really hear in the films:

Dain - A Scottish flavoured theme for Thorin's cousin (both theme's start with the same three notes!)

https://youtu.be/PLoSB_JrKDI?t=1m44s

Bard The Leader - A new theme for Bard as he leads the people of Laketown in the final film

https://youtu.be/QwK3DqcV9rg?t=3m1s

Tauriel/Kili Romance - This is another beautiful melody to represent their relationship

https://youtu.be/IOJhhpUUZSQ?t=0s

If you do enjoy the scores, feel free to post links to your favourite parts! Click on share on the YouTube video, and then tick the 'Start at' box and copy the link. It'll start playing at the exact point you're at in the video.

Thanks [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks for putting this together.

The lack of a developed Beorn theme is still disappointing. I guess there wasn't much of a chance to have one though...

Not sure if you've heard this yet, but someone created a mock up of the full Beorn theme from the DOS piano book. Some parts of it never made it onto any album. In fact the part that didn't sounds it was written to be played during the battle, it has that epic vibe to it.

This is excellent! [In reply to] Can't Post

Thank you for doing this. It really helps the musically challenged (me!) to start identifying the individual themes. I love the soundtracks and I have listened to them a lot, but it takes a bit of a leap for me to go from 'that's familar' as a particular theme plays to the full realisation of 'that's so-and-so's theme.'

Though ironically, given the comments about the Hobbit music, I find there are more themes in the Hobbit films that I can recognise and name...

It's so wonderful to listen to this music on its own... [In reply to] Can't Post

Some of these pieces are so beautiful it gave me chills in the spine!.
Thank you for compiling and listing all this, it is very helpful. Smile

Thanks! [In reply to] Can't Post

And these are only the 'main' ones, I might do another thread showing several examples of the more minor themes.

It's a shame the films don't represent the scores as well as they should! There's so much beautiful writing in here.
