Is some of the intended soundtrack missing from the movies? Or is this a fan version cobbled together from the OST CD?

Is some of the intended soundtrack missing from the movies? Or is this a fan version cobbled together from the OST CD? From your question, I'm guessing that you've never watched Ralph Bakshi's animated adaptation of the first half of The Lord of the Rings. The 1978 film was scored by Leonard Rosenman. I don't think that Rosenman's score holds up as well as Howard Shore's music for the Peter Jackson films.

lotr bakshi fan here, love the music in this film, it has the right amount of darkness and old world to it, and especially the song about gandalf in lothlorien. it is such a good script aswell, its up there with pjs lotr, if you can look past the faults in the animation and some of the character design its very enjoyable.

Rosenman's score was good, very good in places. It's just that it can be so...strident. I have it, but I can't listen to it often.

Bakshi's LOTR has some music not used in the film, that is on CD, also the last two tracks represent an earlier cut of the film that ended with Frodo and Sam resting a bit--sort of like in PJ's TTT--instead Gandalf's arrival at Helm's Deep. These videos restore these cues to the picture.
