Smith of Wootton Major **(spoilers)** Can't Post

I recently finished reading Smith of Wootton Major.

In this beautiful little story, there are Elves, with an Elven King. Is this an entirely different realm from Middle Earth, or is this an Elven kingdom we would know from ME?

Thanks.

It's not Middle-earth. [In reply to] Can't Post

It's more a pure exploration of Tolkien's ideas about the nature of 'Faerie' in the English folk tradition. Tolkien being Tolkien, the writing is in the same style as parts of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, I think.

thanks [In reply to] Can't Post

Ok, thanks for that clarification. That actually makes a lot of sense. I'm glad they're separate narratives and separate "places".

I really enjoyed Farmer Giles of Ham and Smith of Wootton Major.

Allegory? [In reply to] Can't Post

Did you enjoy the story on fave value or did you think of it as an allegory? If so, of what?

Have you read any of George MacDonald's works? I guess Tolkien wrote this in response to one of his stories. (I read one of his fairy stories, The Princess and the Goblin, and wasn't a fan. But, I like some of his other works.)

I read it the same as TH and LOTR [In reply to] Can't Post

I know that Tolkien was a religious person, so I assume he believed in spirits, but I don't see this as an allegory in the true meaning. I see it simply as a work of fantasy.

I have not ready anything by George MacDonald.

I really did enjoy the stories and poems in Tales of the Perilous Realm, however.

I particularly enjoyed discovering the poem from which came the song that Bofur sang at Rivendell in the EE of AUJ. It was nice to see it put to a different rhythm and melody than what I had in my head for the poem.

Thanks.
