We've had a thread of favorite movie quotes, but I don't remember one with favorite quotes in general. So how about it? What are some that resonate with you, that move you, that make you stop and think or just make you laugh? Here are some of mine. "Vivir con miedo es como vivir a medias." (Roughly translated: To live with fear is like a life half-lived) From Baz Luhrmann's Strictly Ballroom "Life is what happens when you're busy making other plans." John Lennon "...those prepare for all the emergencies of life beforehand may equip themselves at the expense of joy." E.M. Forster, Howards End "Just because you think the path that's right for you might be lonelier, longer or less destined for traditional success than paths taken by others, don't be afraid to take it. If you choose your means well you will end up in the right place." Beau Biden "The cosmos is also within us. We're made of star stuff, we are a way for the cosmos to know itself." Carl Sagan, Cosmos And of course from our dear Professor Tolkien: "Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment. For even the very wise cannot see all ends."
You realize that life goes fast It's hard to make the good things last You realize the sun doesn't go down It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning 'round ~Do You Realize?, The Flaming Lips

that goes, "In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer." That's the serious one. But the one I really wanted to post as my favourite is the ultimate Kiwi classic: "Always blow on the pie." Sound advice.

"In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer." I used to love many of the French writers and poets I studied at school twenty-some -odd years ago, but what I remember is a made up proverb from a silly camp comedy (Strictly Ballroom) I love that film, but I wish I had been able to remember something from, say, Baudelaire. I also like the pie one.

This one is one of my favourites: Whaia e koe ki te iti kahurangi; ki te tuohu koe, me maunga teitei. (Seek the treasure you value most dearly: if you bow your head, let it be to a lofty mountain.)
Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." "Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak. “If you judge people, you have no time to love them.” -Mother Teresa “Forever is composed of nows.” -Emily Dickinson “A story must be told or there’ll be no story, yet it is the untold stories that are most moving.” -J.R.R. Tolkien “Whatever colour the pots, the kettle may indeed be black.” -H.V.D. Dyson “A children’s story that can only be enjoyed by children is not a good children’s story in the slightest.” -C.S. Once one of my students told me about acting. "The secret is that you cannot use a negative motivation," he said. "You cannot portray 'not wanting to say,' only 'wanting to leave.' You cannot be a person who 'does not want to be alone,' only a person who is 'eager to be with others.' " "Why are you telling me this?" "Because this knowledge has changed my life." "I am not following you." "Acting starts with just that," he said patiently. "Action. It starts with a simple act portraying a simple positive intention. One intention, one action, then another, and another, and gradually you are asserting your vision. Your audience--the people who are around you--can recognize and respond to something solid and authentic." "All this so magically, so fluidly?" "It's a gradual process, of course," he said," but the point simply is to make an initial act toward what you want to become. Stop ruminating and reconsider your life in terms of actions you can take." From Lydia Minatoya's Talking to High Monks in the Snow
I am a dreamer of words, of written words. I think I am reading; a word stops me. I leave the page. Look at this gem of an entry in our national search for a new NZ flag. I am so gutted to hear it hasn't made the top 40 shortlist.
