Thrain and Dain--Have the same exact weapon Can't Post

I was looking through the Chronicles for BoTFA, and I saw this turn up: Thrain's Axe. I was confused, because I was pretty sure he used a hammer in the movie, a red one. I read farther into it and apparently Dain uses his weapon later on in the movies too. If you look closely at Dain and Thrain's weapon they are both using a red hammer.

We know that Thrain's Scenes were shot again with a different actor, and Dain was replaced with CGI in some scenes. My theory is that the axe was said to be too violent by the MPA (and axe would go through someone whereas a hammer wouldn't), so they scenes had to be shot again) because I know some people working on the movie said that their were a lot of different death scenes and other scenes that were redone and/or taken out because they had to avoid an R Rating.

But Gloin uses an axe [In reply to] Can't Post

and Dwalin uses two axes, and decapitates an Orc or two.

Individuality? [In reply to] Can't Post

I know Thrain uses a hammer, but perhaps Dain was given a hammer vs. an axe because Dwalin and Gloin are so associated with axes - Thrain is not onscreen that long, but we have some really good moments with Dain wielding the hammer. Plus I imagine if you are riding and smacking orcs, there's less chance of a hammer getting stuck or twisting, so you don't have to be so careful about your aim....
although you are right, too re the rating -

we see Dain doing some damage, but it's not like watching an axe sink into a skull or torso and have to get pulled out.Shocked Which again might slow you down if you are riding?

E.g., the concept of the dwarves having distinctive silhouettes? Maybe another big axe w. a "major" dwarf was too many, so Dain got a hammer?UnsureCool

disappointing [In reply to] Can't Post

One of the many last minute changes that disappointed me. It's not that big of a deal, but I think giving him a red axe would have been more unique (and I'm pretty sure it's directly from the book). The whole MPAA rating system is a joke anyway. What they deem as "okay" and "not okay" is ridiculously inconsistent and silly.

I don't blame PJ for this one [In reply to] Can't Post

He made the hammer red as well (nod to the source material), and if the rating was the reason why he switched it, then I think he made the right call. Plus, regardless of the weapon he wielded, Dain was done so well and I think that's what matters most - he was one of my favorite parts of BOFA.
