I'd need a time machine or a fountain of youth for the actors [In reply to] Can't Post

and I'd cast either Virginia Hey or Judi Dench as Galadriel. Virgina Hey has that ethereal quality that I think is needed (I think of her as the priestess with a dark past in Farscape), while Judi Dench has such a commanding presence on screen. Galadriel is thousands of years old but looks young, so you can't cast a 20-something actor in that role credibly for the youthful looks part. You need someone who's been around the block. But humans show their age, alas, and a wrinkled Galadriel on screen wouldn't work either.

Did someone mention Kate Winslet? *man swoon* [In reply to] Can't Post

Much as I adore her, I don't think Kate has the inner fire or sense of command that I think Galadriel ought to have. I think Galadriel ought to be slightly intimidating, not out of evil, but just because she's intense and powerful and stronger than everyone else. I think it's a really tough role to cast. Not a butch, kickbutt woman, or one who curses like a sailor and chews cigars, but someone that makes you sit up straight when they enter the room.

Yeah, I was messin' with ya. So fun to make you swoon. [In reply to] Can't Post

But...I dunno. I think she may have pulled it off, if she was a bit older at the time - say the age she is now.

I think Cate Blanchett fits your description perfectly [In reply to] Can't Post

PJ and company did an excellent job casting LOTR, but Cate Blanchett was especially inspired. I can't think of anyone of any age or era who would have been better.

It's difficult to imagine anyone else now, but... [In reply to] Can't Post

The only major roles that I might like to see re-cast would be Sam and Frodo. I hate saying that because I loved them and their chemistry together, and thought they did a wonderful job. But Hobbits are supposed to be quintessentially English and, unfortunately, talented as they are, they never really maintained completely convincing English accents.

I never had a problem with Elijah Wood's age; a hobbit at 33 is about the same as a human at 21, Elijah had enough maturity and gravitas at his 17 years to be a convincing hobbit of 33 (keeping in mind that the films didn't add on those 17 years after the party and before Frodo's adventure). It was only ever the inconsistent accent that bothered me at all.

There was another thread about David Bowie having been considered for Elrond; I agree he would have been a distraction in that role, but I think he would have been good as Celeborn.

John Hurt as Gandalf (Ian McKellen himself has alluded he would be a good alternative)

Frank Langella as Saruman

Billy Connolly would have been a good choice for Gimli 20 years ago, and I think he'd do rather better than his cameo as Dain

Patrick Stewart as Denethor

Colm Meaney as Bilbo

Brian Blessed as Tom Bombadil

Eva Green as Galadriel

Paul McGann as Aragorn (as he looks now)

Technically not one of the Fellowship, but... [In reply to] Can't Post

Marjorie Monaghan had a guest role on one episode of Star Trek Voyager where she played a holodeck Viking shield maiden. She looked almost exactly like my mental image of Eowyn. But I'm not sure if she had the acting chops to really own the role the way Miranda Otto did.

Sir Patrick... [In reply to] Can't Post

I wholeheartedly agree with your choice for Denethor, Sir Ian vs Sir Patrick in Middle-earth, epic!
I would also suggest Jennifer Connelly as she looked 16 years ago for the role of Arwen; every time I re-read the Silmarillion I picture her as Lúthien, and as Arwen too for the LOTR re-reads.

In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit...
